Guest GreatOne Report post Posted October 25, 2004 In my Tim McCarver/Lance Storm moment, I should point out that with the exceptions of New Mexico State and Utah State, each school was a 1-AA football member at one point (hell almost half the conf was in just the last seven years) And with the WAC having three ex-Big Sky members next year (Idaho, Boise St, Nevada), I hope EWU doesn't get any ideas
Edwin MacPhisto 0 Report post Posted October 26, 2004 I'm sure they'll check into Spurrier again, but the real guy to go after is Urban Meyer. It'll be tough to keep in Utah after this season.
cabbageboy 0 Report post Posted October 26, 2004 Trust me, having seen UK this year I can safely say they are the worst team in the SEC. I'm amazed that they beat IU to be honest, but that's sort of a rivalry game for jobbers (heh, the heat slightly extends from the basketball series). They lost to Ohio, lost to S. Carolina with SC's 4th stringer at QB. I was pleasantly surprised that they only lost to Auburn by 32 this week. I was fearing the game would be historically brutal. We're talking "Tim Couch running the option in his first college start in the Swamp" bad here. As far as Vandy being the worst team in the SEC, well, they waxed UK last year. Vandy's traditionally the worst team in the SEC but they're always well coached and, with experience, can prove to be decent. The reason they're decent this year is that they returned about 23 starters, making them the most experienced team in the league so far. As far as UK goes, I'd agree that they're bad but they haven't lost to a Division I-AA team. That's the main reason that Mississippi State comes in below them, even taking the Florida win into consideration.

Spurrier, IMHO, would be nuts to go back to Florida. It's hard to follow a legend, even if it's yourself. On top of that, he has almost nothing left to achieve there, as he's already won a national title and coached one of his pet QBs to a Heisman Trophy. The only thing left would be to challenge the old Oklahoma winning streak (48 games?) and that would be damn near impossible to pull off in the SEC, let along any other league. He's better off taking over a big program in transition that needs a new coach. Clemson comes to mind, as Tommy Bowden will be looking for work at the end of the season. Trust me. The deal he signed is too generous for Clemson to buy out and THEN hire somebody else. -=Mike
Guest Ether Report post Posted October 26, 2004 If anybody needs to go from Nebraska it's Steve Pederson. I mean, no offense to some Pitt fans (hint hint) around here but dude, Pitt was a freaking jobber while you were the AD there. Now you're coming and telling NEBRASKA how to do football? I mean hell what's next, Jim Sterk leaves Wazzu for Miami tomorrow and says 'OK boys this is how we're gonna run our football program'? As for Zook, yeah it was a mistake but who the hell was Florida supposed to hire at the time? George O'Leary? Rick Neuheisel? I have to disagree somewhat with the Steve Pederson comment. He took over a program that in 1996 lost to WVU 45-0, Ohio State 72-0, Notre Dame 60-6, and to Syracuse and Miami by at least 40 points also (I don't rememeber the exact scores). After his tenure, Pitt football became a team that is competitive and usually hovers around the Top 25. Other sports, most notably basketball, also improved duirng his tenure. Pedersons' biggest problem in this case is that he is overbearing and will stomp on underlings. He was able to get by with this some at Pitt because the money teams (football and basketball) ended up improving dramatically because of this. The tearing down on Pitt Stadium is a good example. The stadium was a dump that housed a crappy football team, while now, the football teams plays in a great stadium, and the team is usually good. The basketball team also now plays in a great venue that sits where Pitt stadium used to be, and has gone something like 43-1 in that building. Unfortunate for him at Nebraska, he quickly replaced a protege of a legendary coach in bullish fashion, and the results this season are becoming horrific. therealworldschampion 0 Report post Posted October 26, 2004 An source has apparently told ESPN that Florida has contacted Steve Spurrier about returning. If Spurrier does go back to the Gators, the source said look for him to go after Oklahoma's Bo Pellini to be the defensive coordinator. Check ESPN.com's front page for the source. Gordon Gee, Ohio State's former AD, made the decision to do so. It supposedly shows that athletics are no more important than acedemics.
