Congrats to Jeter, I guess he won due to his consecutive games without an error streak. I bet you alot of people are going to bash him based on some Bill James geek statistic like zone or range or whatever that dumb bs is. I am suprised Arod didn't win. I think he had an outstanding first year at short stop even more so because he switched posistions. And every other year it seems that either Mussina or Kenny Roger wins the glove for pitcher.

Congrats to Jeter, I guess he won due to his consecutive games without an error streak. I bet you alot of people are going to bash him based on some Bill James geek statistic like zone or range or whatever that dumb bs is. I am suprised Arod didn't win. He's racking up hall of fame numbers and has 4 rings. But we'll wait until his career is over.

148 games, no errors, 11 assists. He deserves some credit, especially for a left fielder.

Catcher: Pudge had the best AVG, OBP, SLG and OPS among catchers. He played the least amount amount of games among the top catchers and had one of his worst FPCT in years.

 

Javy Lopez, Jason Varitek and Victor Martinez played better ball behind the plate.

 

First Base: I don't know about Darin Erstad as the gold glove winner. He had a so so year, but his FPCT (.996) was great and he did commit only 4 errors.

 

Paul Konerko had one hell of a year with 41 HR and 117 RBI while batting .277, his FPTC was (.995) and commited 6 errors.

 

Mark Teixeira had an awesome second year hitting .281 with 38 HR and 112 RBI. but his FPTC was (.992) and he commited 10 errors.

 

Second Base: There were so many better 2B then Boone this season. However he ranked 2nd in HR and RBI but his .avg was piss poor. If Soriano had not commited 23 errors it would have been his.

 

Shortstop: Derek Jeter had one of the top FPCT this yr (.981) and commited only 13 errors.

 

Michael Young had his best season to date .avg, HR and RBI. He played 158 games but he commited 19 errors at short. Miguel Tejada had 150 RBI this season but he commited 24 errors.

 

Third Base: I'm not exactly sure why Eric Chavez was picked. He played 125 games due to injury and only hit 29 HR 77 RBI with a .276 AVG. His FPCT was pretty bad (.968) and he commited 13 errors.

 

A-rod would seem like the obvious choice but he actually had a worse FPCT then Chaez (.965) and his numbers were a far cry from a few years ago.

 

Melvin Mora had an awesome year but his (.948) FPCT and 21 errors hurt him.

 

CF: I'm wondering why this never went to Johnny Damon, he had a career year with .304 20 HR and 94 RBI. He played 148 games at CF (.986) FPCT with 5 errors.

 

However, Vernon Wells was flawless at CF with a (.997) FPCT and only 1 error. His knock is that he only played 131 games.

 

I'm thinking maybe MLB is making up for not giving him the gold glove last year when he deserved it.

 

RF: Can't complain about Ichiro winning the Gold Glove.

 

I figured they were going with a LF next, but they went with Tori Hunter. Damon easily smokes hunter.

trust me, I watch Lee every day. The only reason he has no errors is because lazy pop ups that anyone else with two legs could run down aren't counted as errors.

 

in the intrest of fairness, Boone and Ichiro are terible choices as well as Jeter.

Fielding percentage and errors are poor indicators of actual fielding skill. It only measures obvious screw-ups.

 

Derek Jeter winning is complete nonsense. He didn't have a bad fielding year at all. In fact, it was his best ever. But Christian Guzman was far and away the best defensive shortstop in the American League. By any statistical measure, Guzman tops Jeter.

 

Bret Boone winning is pure laziness from the voters. Orlando Hudson is clearly the superior fielder.

How is it bs? Should we all just sit in the dark with our heads between our legs and decide we can not read fielding statistics? Or should we give it our best shot? If you actually read James' work, you might learn a great deal.
