Der Kommissar 0 Report post Posted November 19, 2004 Well, I was flipping through the channels today, and I happened upon a fascinating documentary on A & E about competitive eating. Apparently, these guys travel around the world entering eating contests. They have even formed an International Federation of Competitive Eating who compiles rankings for all the various professional eaters, led by that Japanese guy who broke the hot dog eating world record a few years ago. Anyway, they were calling it a sport, so I have to ask: competitive eating: sport or not? I am thinking not, but considering how liberally the word "sport" is used these days, I could see it fitting into such a loose definition. I am just still amazed that there are people out there who make a job out of travelling around, entering eating contests.
The Mandarin 0 Report post Posted November 19, 2004 I mark for Kobayashi, or whatever the hell his name is. His performance on Man vs. Beast against that pimpin' bear was admirable.

Guest Salacious Crumb Report post Posted November 24, 2004 Kobayashi is a machine if you've ever seen him eat hot dogs before. Why not have it be competitive. I'm sure there are far worse things out there than eating. I won't watch it because it's disgusting for the most part but if someone makes a living doing it then more power to them. Kaertos 0 Report post Posted November 24, 2004 (edited) It really hurts me that people want to lump this sideshow extravaganza in with legitimate sports like baseball and football. However, by any definition of sport that I can come up with, it qualifies... For me: Sport = athletic endeavor where the competitors are judged against each other by some objective means of scoring. i.e. baseball is a sport, but figure skating is not. Football is a sport, but gymnastics is not. Actually, re-reading that... I guess it doesn't qualify after all. Cool.
