Guest The Winter Of My Discontent Report post Posted December 6, 2004 Again, I'm not trying to say NO SIR THEY CAN NEVER BEAT THE STEELERS because quite frankly, any team can beat any other team on any day. However, with both teams at full strength, every indicator is that the Eagles can't handle the Steelers running game, and their passing game will be stunted by the Steelers' blitz (which it did pretty nicely in the first game) when the Eagles can't run the ball against their stout front seven. i. The Eagles handled Green Bay's supposedly great running game ii & iii. Both of those would be alleviated by Brian Westbrook. I really don't know who'd ultimately win. I can certainly see the Pats running the table to end the season (with possibly the Jets and maybe the Bengals being possible threats), putting a possible AFC title game in Gillette. Like you said, the Pats will probably run the table; the Steelers have to do so as well in order to get to the Super Bowl. I have no confidence in our ability to win AT New England in the AFC Championship game. And I think Plax is inactive for this one, which is a major hit. You're completely discounting the fact that the Steelers absolutely put an asswhooping on the Eagles with a shitty, overweight, backup running back just because Bryan Westbrook wasn't completely healthy. So that's not quite true, but the running game was nullified by the fact that the defense played so abysmal that there was no way they could take their time to march up the field and score. Bettis is slow to hit the hole and rarely picks up anything after first contact. He's not nearly close to what he used to be; the simple fact that you could drive about two mack trucks through the holes that line makes is the only reason Bettis sniffs 100 yards each game. The Steelers put an ass whooping on the Pats, and I doubt you'd say they'd do it again. Westbrook is more important to his offense than Staley is. No doubt. Plus the Steeler's haven't looked nearly as dominant over the past few games as they did against Philly and New England. People are starting to figure them out. I wouldn't argue that they'll blow out New England again simply because of Belicheck, who completely owns Cowher. The Steelers would only win a second matchup in spite of their terrible coaching. Philly, on the other hand, doesn't match up with Pittsburgh well at all on either side of the ball. Their problem is, quite simply, that their defensive front seven is built for speed. Really? I'm not exactly the first to claim BenRo has hit the wall. I love BenRo. I do. But he hasn't looked as strong lately as he did when he began. Which two running backs has BenRo lost? I know of Staley. Plax is understandable. Who cares if the starting fullback is injured? So is the Eagles, but no one is griping about that one. Discussing BenRo's productivity has less to do with the points they're putting up, than his high number of being sacked, his 50% completion ratings, and a smidge over 100 yards passing. After watching the Steelers for the past three years and watching Krieder consistently neutralize the likes of Ray Lewis, it's not hard to surmise that he's pretty damned important to the offense. The Eagles have been going single back for years now, so I don't buy that argument for their side of the game. However, the Steelers mostly run out of offset I, which makes the fullback critical. When he goes down, it hurts the running back significantly. I'm also curious to see if Ben wears gloves tonight.
