Tim Hudson traded to the Dodgers

Recommended Posts

Yes I know this was mentioned in the Winter Meetings thread and the trade actually isn't 100% official but this deserves it's own thread.

This is first time Beane has ever made a trade where he seemed forced to do so which is why I never thought he'd deal Hudson. He let the likes of Jason Giambi and Miguel Tejada leave when he could have traded them the previous offseason. It's very hard to get equal value for a player in a walk year. My only guess is either Hudson and his agent demanded a trade or Beane doesn't feel even with Hudson that the A's have the team going into 2005 to win the A.L. West so it's better get get something to help for the future.

I'm severly dissapointed with this deal. Edwin Jackson should step into the rotation and I expect Antonio Perez to win the second base job but neither of them will become a superstar overnight. With the A's situation in Oakland always being delicate with an ownership that constantly tells their fans that we're not good enough for them, this trade is going to be a p.r. nightmare. It's going to be impossible to sell the average fan on Edwin Jackson and Antonio Perez no matter how much potential they have. You've just traded your ace who's call up in 1999 sparked the turn around of this franchise and that is going to make no one happy.

A's will need a lot of things to break their way now in 2005, starting with Mark Mulder and Barry Zito both returning to their former Cy Young calibar selves.

Uh nope. Mulder completely collapsed the last two months of the season and overall for the year was a league average pitcher. He wasn't even the 2nd best starter on the A's, Rich Harden was.

No I meant the A's management viewed him as the ace. I didn't mean that he played like one.

WTF....this is the first time I question BEANE, but I admit I can't be to mad at him, since all things considered it was looking more likely that Hudson was gone after this season, even though Hudson was THE GUY who said that the A's signing Chavez long term was a big factor in his decision to either stay with the A's or seek a new team after this season. Dammit. I hope Jackson can join the roation without too much disruption, and with the aquisition of Perez, where does this leave Mark Ellis, who I am assuming will be 100% healthy by the time April rolls around......would be pushed to 1st base and Hatterburg goes to the bench or trade? The breakup of the Big Three hurts, but Harden has gotten better with every start and he should BREAK OUT this season. It just really hurts losing the staff Ace and VETEREN GENERAL.

Ellis moved to first base? That's a bizarre idea. Anyways Ellis is NOT assumed to be 100% healthy by April. His shoulder injury is not progressing well at all. His future is probably as a back-up middle infielder anyway. Just doesn't have the bat to be an everyday player.

I'm surprised they didn't get Choi included. Sure he hasn't proved himself yet but he is a very cheap option at first base.

Blanton is going to be a stud so losing Hudson now isn't as big a deal as some would make it. I think Edwin Jackson will do well in Oakland seeing as how its even more of a pitcher's park than the Dodgers park.

A's have three left-handed hitting first baseman on their current projected Opening Day roster (Durazo, Hatteberg, Dan Johnson) so they didn't need another one.

Oakland played as a neutral park this past year. Dodger Stadium is much more of a pitcher's park than the Coliseum.

I've heard several times they're looking to move Durazo though. A's were pretty pissed that while everybody else was fighting with injuries he sat out one game in the final week with a headache and another with a sore back. He was just DHing.

After Beane's courting of him all those years and coming off a year where he was the A's best hitter I just can't see them dealing him. He is arb eligible but most reports have him inking a new deal. I personally would like them to deal Hatteberg to free up some salary to improve their weak middle relief and give Johnson the first base job to get more power in the line-up.

Added note it's possible the Bay Area media jumped the gun on the Hudson deal. There has been absolutely nothing about the deal being finalized today.

And now this from rotoworld.com:

Tim Hudson told MLB.com that no trade between the Dodgers and A's has been completed yet.

"It's still all speculation right now," Hudson said. "If a deal was done, I'd know about it, and I haven't heard anything concrete." The A's may be trying to get an extra prospect from the Dodgers, who seem prepared to give up Edwin Jackson and Antonio Perez for Hudson. Dec

ANAHEIM, Calif. -- Tim Hudson might not be Los Angeles-bound after all.

Dodgers general manager Paul DePodesta and his Oakland counterpart, Billy Beane, have talked extensively about Hudson at baseball's winter meetings.

But DePodesta denied a report that a deal was close to being completed.

"It has been overblown," DePodesta said late Sunday. "At times, it has been reported it was done. That was never the case. We continue to still talk with them.

"My understanding is they're still dealing with a lot of teams. They're exploring their options. They're not ready to do something yet."

Beane said the A's are "closer to a trade," but added he wouldn't say there's anything imminent.

"Don't assume who or what you think it is," Beane said. "I don't think a real big deal is going to happen and you can decipher what you think is a big deal."

The 29-year-old Hudson, 12-6 with a 3.53 ERA last season, recently set a March 1 deadline for the A's to offer him a contract extension or he'll leave as a free agent following next season.

DePodesta said he and Beane know each other so well that they can get something done quickly if it comes to that.

"We haven't even gotten to the point where we've made an offer," DePodesta said. "We've talked about specific players. We're on the same wave length in terms of players. I don't think there's much mystery on either side."

I'm starting to think the A's floated the rumor to the media in an attempt to get one of the other team's to panic and put a bigger package together.
