Bored 0 Report post Posted December 12, 2004 Dammit no Chow time at Stanford. STANFORD, Calif. -- Pittsburgh's Walt Harris was hired as Stanford's new football coach Sunday, giving the Cardinal the offensive-minded leader they sought to replace Buddy Teevens. Tyrone Willingham, who last month was fired abruptly by Notre Dame three years into his five-year contract, is expected to return to the Pac-10 as the new coach at Washington. The Seattle Times, citing an anonymous source, reported Sunday that Willingham's hiring will be announced early this week. He would be Washington's third coach in four years. San Francisco 49ers coach Dennis Erickson has emerged as the secret leading candidate to become coach at the University of Mississippi, multiple sources have told ESPN's Chris Mortensen. nogoodnick 0 Report post Posted December 12, 2004 I find it pretty amusing that the coach from BCS bound Big East champ Pittsburgh would rather coach at mediocre Stanford. I guess that just shows how shitty the Big East really is.
2GOLD 0 Report post Posted December 12, 2004 Mississippi fired their head coach for DENNIS ERICKSON??? Why? Are they looking to sink to the bottom of the SEC like a rock?
iggymcfly 0 Report post Posted December 12, 2004 Why would Washington hire Willingham instead of Mike Tice. That's retarded. The recruting edge that they'd get from a black head coach, would be nice, but not as strong as the edge from having someone who's been successful in the NFL. I mean the guy just got done going 6-5 at Notre Dame, and you think he'll be better than the head coach of the Minnesota Vikings? And if they're worried about recruiting this year, they're only saving about three or four weeks, because we all know it would take a miracle for the Vikings to get past the first round of the playoffs. In the long run, I think this looks like a terrible decision.
nogoodnick 0 Report post Posted December 12, 2004 I don't think you understand that Erickson is a great COLLEGE coach. I mean he took Miami to two national titles and somehow brought Oregon State to the Fiesta Bowl. Also alumni and booster funraising at OSU literally doubled once he became head coach. Hes also 9th among active NCAA coaches for victories.
therealworldschampion 0 Report post Posted December 12, 2004 Erickson kind of strikes me as more lucky than good. I mean you could probably account the 1989 national championship to Jimmy Johnson's players, and Gerry Thomas had to go Wide Right for Miami to win the 1991 title. I've also heard that a lot of the talent that OSU used to get to the Fiesta Bowl in 2000 can be more accredited to Mike Riley's recruiting.
nogoodnick 0 Report post Posted December 12, 2004 Actually just about all the talent was Rileys. Chad Johnson, Houshmandzawduh(sp?), Simonton, and Smith. But I highly doubt Riley wouldve gotten that much out of them. Hell, Erickson left Riley great players and he didn't do much besides win the crappy Las Vegas bowl with em. Guest Ether Report post Posted December 13, 2004 I find it pretty amusing that the coach from BCS bound Big East champ Pittsburgh would rather coach at mediocre Stanford. I guess that just shows how shitty the Big East really is. You obviously know nothing about the situation between Walt Harris and Pitt or you wouldn't have posted such an ignorant statement. Walt Harris was put on the hot seat after last season's underachieving disaster, and probably would have been fired if our athletic director had not have just taken the job a few months earlier (there is little doubt that previous AD Steve Pederson would have fired him). A lot also happened between then and now, but Harris' agent publically bashing the administration and the program is probably what sealed his fate. The Stanford opening - it should be noted that Walt Harris has a long, postive history with their AD from from his days at Pacific and is also from that area - worked out perfectly for both sides. The Pitt administration - justifiably or not - showed Walt Harris the door, not the other way around.

They'll back into the playoff this year, if they make it. They completley collapsed last season. Watching the Vikings every week, Tice is a horrible horrible coach. Willingham is fucking Bill Walsh compared to this big jackass.

I'll admit I know very little about the situation. Thats just what it looks like from most peoples perspectives. Also the Big East still sucks.
teke184 0 Report post Posted December 13, 2004 Mississippi fired their head coach for DENNIS ERICKSON??? Why? Are they looking to sink to the bottom of the SEC like a rock? Well, it IS Ole Miss, so they sink there naturally until the next generation of Mannings come along. Seriously, though, Cutcliffe wasn't a great coach although I feel it was shitting to fire him for one 4-7 season considering that they had the school's best season in 30 years last season. Erickson, though, is a good enough coach and desperately needs to get out of San Fran considering that the team's owner is more concerned with pinching pennies than winning. It will be interesting to see an SEC with coaches Nick Saban, Urban Meyer, Steve Spurrier, Dennis Erickson, Phillip Fulmer, Houston Nutt, and Tommy Tuberville all involved. (Mike Shula isn't distinguishing himself, Sly Croom needs about 2 more years in order to build a I-A quality team at Mississippi State considering what Jackie Sherrill left behind, and no one cares about Kentucky or Vandy.) Guest Salacious Crumb Report post Posted December 16, 2004 Ohio University hired Frank Solich.
Vern Gagne 0 Report post Posted December 16, 2004 It's a running program. Guess, it fits Solich's style. Pitt has interest in Dave Wannstedt. Apparently Wannstedt, will consider it but might want to get back in the NFL has a head coach. You know who, I'd like to see try coaching in college. Jim Haslett. The fiery persona and getting on the players might be better suited for the college level.
