Must See Matches

Yes, that was a very good match, one of the better 'E matches of 2003. Indeed, it may well have been as good as the No Mercy tag match of the previous year. What is most incredible is they only get 12 or 13 minutes, too. With 20 - 25, I have no doubt they would have had a match VERY close to MOTY status (it is anyway, but even closer).

Has anyone watched the SD rematch, recently? I loved that at the time, but don't remember it as well as the Vengeance match. In fact, the 7 minute (or so) match they had before Mania was pretty rockin' too.

Yes, I remember liking that rematch quite a lot, although I haven't seen it recently. Probably look it up on my tape collection and give it a new go. BTW? Is the rematch the one that finishes with a modified Doomsday Device? I think I have both matches mixed up.

I was just looking through this thread, and all the comments about the Triple Threat from WM XX. You know why everyone seemed to like it so well? Because the net fans were all marks for Benoit and Benoit won the title. That's it. Seriously, that match was lucky if it even cracked ****. The action wasn't smooth, it didn't tell a story, there wasn't even that much drama in it. It was a big mess of finishers being broken up, before Benoit countered the Pedigree and made HHH tap out in a very predictable ending. Shit, the singles match between HHH and HBK fom 3 1/2 months before was far superior in terms of actual match quality.

Oh, if I'm bumping this thread I suppose I should mention something positive too. Here's a then and now for RVD:

Now: RVD/Angle vs. Edge/Orton from this last Tuesday. I really liked this match a lot. Much better than the predictable crap that's been running on WWE TV lately.

Then: RVD vs. Austin from Smackdown on 09/04/01. RVD having possibly his best singles match in the WWE at the absolute peak of his popularity. If you went back and watched this match now, you'd probably be shocked at how over RVD was. He was getting the Rock/Austin/Hogan icon pop, the kind that Vince dreams about Cena getting. Oh, and the match was tremendous too. Austin hadn't lost even remotely close to clean in 7 months, but RVD took everything he had to give and came right back at him to get the pinfall. I haven't seen it in a long time, so I don't remember all the details, but the pacing was incredible, and everything built very well toward the finish.

Of all the matches listed, you find the Mania 3-way to be the one most worthy of criticism? Come on man, there's a load of matches listed here that aren't even good. Besides, the criteria, as far as I know, isn't simply "great matches", it is "must see matches". That covers great matches, memorable matches, memorable moments, historic title changes, etc. I know that, if I hadn't seen it, regardless of match quality, I would want to check out the WMXX main event.

I do agree, though, it's not THAT great of a match, but I still like it. More than most, in fact.

The other ones weren't mentioned in 12 different posts.

Then that should tell you it is a must see match. Not that it's a great match, but a match that impacted so many different people and had a tremendous effect. That, to me, is a "must see" match.

It's a must-see match if you're a Benoit mark. That was my whole point. That the match is really only enjoyable if you're a Benoit mark. I watched it rooting for HBK and HHH 2nd with the idea that at least it wouldn't be so damn predictable, and I found the match to be very dull and formula. Better than an average PPV match to be sure, but nowhere near the quality that I'd expect for a WM main event.
