Guest Failed Mascot Report post Posted December 16, 2004 I predict right now that Hudson wins the NL Cy Young award. Not only does he now pitch in the weak hitting NL East but he's also teamed up with Leo Mazzone. Barring injury he'll have an ERA of around 2.00 and win 20 games. The Man in Blak 0 Report post Posted December 16, 2004 Braves get Tim Hudson Oakland gets Charles Thomas, Dan Meyer, and Juan Cruz Beane doesn't look so good in this deal. I don't know about that. Losing Hudson is obviously a huge hit, but the people that are returned in the trade aren't bad at all: - OF Charles Thomas: Had an .813 OPS last year, thanks to (you guessed it) a .368 OBP, and showed a little bit of power (7 home runs in 236 ABs). He's only 25 and last year was his first taste of the show, so he could see some marked improvement in the next few years. - RHP Juan Cruz: I still don't know exactly why the Cubs got rid of this guy. Also 25, he's got 255 strikeouts in 275 career innings. He was way out of his depth as a starter, due to a lack of command, but his stuff has tremendous movement. Depending on what they decide to do with Dotel, they could easily groom Cruz for the closer job. In the meantime, he'll be an asset in middle relief. - LHP Dan Meyer: Another young player at 22 years of age. Meyer barely had enough exposure in a September callup to really gauge his true skills, but his outlook in Baseball Prospectus ("The college product has a tremendous changeup and plus command") and his impressive strikeout rate in the minors could foretell effectiveness in middle relief. Bored 0 Report post Posted December 16, 2004 Braves get Tim Hudson Oakland gets Charles Thomas, Dan Meyer, and Juan Cruz Beane doesn't look so good in this deal. It's not Beane. It's owner Steve Schott. He didn't get his postseason revenue this year so he's not allowing any payroll increase at all, in fact it might end up being lower than last year. This is a 100% salary dump. It's almost impossible to get equal value for a player in a walk year and it totally goes against Beane's normal way of doing things. As for who they got Thomas is nothing special and probably just insurance in case Nick Swisher struggles. Meyer is good but he won't make an immediate impact. Cruz will definently help their weak middle relief, unless they plan on trading Dotel to avoid paying him anything in arbitration and then hand Cruz the closer job. the pinjockey 0 Report post Posted December 16, 2004 I am going to echo MIB's sentiments here in that this wasn't a terrible deal. Thomas had some solid stats at the plate with a decent amount of walks and has the ability to cover a ton of territory in the outfield. It seemed, from the Phils/Braves games I saw this year, he was covering as much ground if not more than Jones out there. Not a bad pick up at all. Cruz was covered and I know nothing about Meyer. Guest Failed Mascot Report post Posted December 16, 2004 I just don't think they got a good enough package. There are no sure fire future All Stars in that package for a pitcher with one of the best career winning percentages ever(with a minimum of 100 starts). strummer 0 Report post Posted December 16, 2004 Al has to plug the numbers and see who is a favorite to win the East now. I have a feeling it will come out differently now.. Congratulations Braves fans on your 14 straight divsion title.

Guest Smues Report post Posted December 16, 2004 Sad to see Chucky go, he has a bright future ahead of him. Saved our asses last year when everyone was injured. I have no idea what our outfield is going to look like next year other then center field. Glad we got Hudson though.
Guest Failed Mascot Report post Posted December 16, 2004 If Jacque Jones is non-tendered I fully expect him to head to Atlanta now. Magglio Ordonez could be another option for a one year deal if he can prove his knee is healthy.
Guest The Shadow Behind You Report post Posted December 16, 2004 I swear Atlanta has the greatest luck at drawing the best pitchers out of their asses. Last year the rotation looked meek and it kicked ass as usual...here they got a bona fide ACE. #14. Philadelphia can enjoy it's dogfight with Houston, Chicago and San Diego for the WC. There are no sure fire future All Stars in that package for a pitcher with one of the best career winning percentages ever(with a minimum of 100 starts). Like I said you can't get equal value for a player in a walk year. Beane would not have traded Hudson if he wasn't told that payroll wasn't going to be raised this year. Guest Failed Mascot Report post Posted December 16, 2004 They could have gotten more from Atlanta though. Kevin Grybowski would have been a nice throw in seeing as how Oakland's bullpen blew a fat one last season.

The Czech Republic 0 Report post Posted December 16, 2004 Cruz sucked on the North Side.
Guest Smues Report post Posted December 16, 2004 Groundball Gryboski would probably not be what Oakland wants. He's great when you need to induce a double play and end the inning. That's about it.
Guest Failed Mascot Report post Posted December 16, 2004 Gryboski and his 24 strikeouts and 23 walks? Cruz is better and five years younger. I didn't say to subtract Cruz. Gryboski was still better than Jim Mecir and most of the other arms they had in their pen.
Bored 0 Report post Posted December 16, 2004 Maybe. Mecir is retiring and I think with the addition of Cruz they'll non-tender Chad Bradford who has gone from a good set-up man to mediocre specialist in a real hurry. Right now they're hoping Hutson Street is the real deal.
Guest The Winter Of My Discontent Report post Posted December 17, 2004 Due to injuries, amongst other things, Tim Hudson will not reach the numbers he had with the A's. He's often injured, and in the clutch, has had trouble executing. Whenever the A's have needed him most, he has been unavailable. While they didn't get any stars in the deal, they'll plug up some of their weaknesses.
Dogbert 0 Report post Posted December 17, 2004 I don't hate this trade from Oakland's perspective. They got three guys with real potential to be stars.
Guest Smell the ratings!!! Report post Posted December 17, 2004 Dan Meyer is one of the best starting pitching prospects around, though he's not as good as Edwin Jackson. Juan Cruz is basically Victor Zambrano. Charles Thomas can't really hit like he did last year, but he's a good defender. I'll assume everyone already knows about Tim Hudson. geniusMoment 0 Report post Posted December 17, 2004 Blame Carl Linder, the reds GM had the deal all set up. Adam Dunn for Hudson, but the owner nixed it, not wanting to give Hudson a long term deal.

EVIL~! alkeiper 0 Report post Posted December 17, 2004 Given that Hudson will reach free agency after this season, I think the Braves come out well in this trade. In 350 minor league innings, Dan Meyer has racked up 381 strikeouts compared to just 87 walks, and 24 strikeouts. Cruz gives the Athletics some needed bullpen depth.
