Guest ErekT2k Report post Posted June 5, 2002 The league only cares about the point catagory in my opinion. I don't think a great defensive player, a great passer, will ever get the MVP again. The fact Malone has 2 MVPs and Stockton never got any realistic votes says volumes. I still believe that the only reason Duncan won the MVP was because of the points column. The last MVP to be a master at assists, rebounds, and points was Magic Johnson. Since then, scoring leaders (MJ, Hakeem, etc) have been getting the MVPs. I refer to Iverson last year and Shaq the year before that. Ripper speaks volumes in that quote right there. But come on guys, let it be. One team is in the Finals and the other is, well, at home. There's no need to argue anymore. The true MVP has already shown himself, which is why, IMO, they should give the award at the end of the playoffs.
Guest bravesfan Report post Posted June 5, 2002 Yeah, I'll agree: Kidd deserves the MVP for his continued playoff work, considering he made it past Duncan, even though Tim did all the work by himself. But thing is, leagues like the NFL, MLB and NBA will never consider playoff performance in their MVP balloting. Hell, if they did, Tom Brady and Derek Jeter would be probable MVPs, while the great regular season players (Duncan, McNabb, Bonds, Giambi) were getting screwed for no apparent reason. Guest bravesfan Report post Posted June 5, 2002 The last MVP to be a master at assists, rebounds, and points was Magic Johnson.Since then, scoring leaders (MJ, Hakeem, etc) have been getting the MVPs. Name 1 player in those years that had better years than MJ, Hakeem, D-Rob and Malone, while doing great at assists as well? For me, Stockton is the only one that comes to mind, and in his career years (97-98) I believe his teammate took the MVP. And to be honest, guys like Pippen, Stockton and such were always playing "second fiddle" to the stars for a reason. Jordan made Pippen look AWESOME. Malone took an All-Star defender in Stockton and helped him to many assists titles and Dream Team appearances. Kidd was doing WELL on a horribly-run team (Mavs), Magic Johnson was already retired or doing his best impersonation of Hulk Hogan and Kevin Johnson did not have much points or rebounds. Gary Payton was horribly overshadowed by Baker and Kemp, though... I refer to Iverson last year and Shaq the year before that. Ripper speaks volumes in that quote right there. No one has ever questioned why Iverson got MVP. NO ONE. If you disagree, give me ONE REASON the 76ers got to the Finals last year.... And Shaq? Well, Kobe was still developing into an All-Star and they still won the NBA title. Go figure...
Guest Ripper Report post Posted June 5, 2002 "Kevin Johnson did not have much points or rebounds" ahem...I know it has nothing to do with the thread, but my hero's skills have come into question. Kevin Johnson averaged 20 pts and 9 assist in the year he was besides Kidd and arguably had a better year. And since Majic won the MVP with the scoring and assist...let me think. KEVIN JOHNSON. One year Jordan won the MVP even though 1. the Suns had a better record 2. The Suns were a lottery team the year before 3. Kevin averaged 22 pts and 12 (!) assist 5 rebounds and was second in the top 5 in steals. And what did he get for the trouble...4th in MVP voting. ROBBERY!!!! Guest bravesfan Report post Posted June 5, 2002 My bad... if that was KJ's stats were that, maybe he was robbed. But think about it: nothing short of God resurrecting and averaging 100+ points a game, would stop Michael Jordan from garnering votes based on popularity. Guest Ripper Report post Posted June 6, 2002 Yeah, the Suns were the Cinderella, realtively unknown that year and the Bulls were building what would become a dynasty and everyone knew it. It would have been hard to beat jordan...but I will still bitch about it as a KJ fan.
Guest Vern Gagne Report post Posted June 6, 2002 Why exactly is this still a debate. Duncan won the MVP it's not that big a deal.
Guest Ripper Report post Posted June 6, 2002 Because I will keep saying Kidd should have won the MVP until he wins one, basically. Yeah Duncan won, and this is the backlash from me. Plus Kidd is still proving that they made the wrong decision.
