Dr. Tom 0 Report post Posted December 23, 2004 Get your holiday football fix It's been up since Tuesday evening, meaning I was actually on time for once. I've decided to postpone the steroids issue to next week, since I had to do the playoff scenarios, plus talk about how the NFL under-punished Donovin Darius. Discuss. Guest Vitamin X Report post Posted December 23, 2004 While I agree with you strongly that Brett made some ridiculously stupid throws this past week, I still blame a defense that has been racking up penalties in the past 3 weeks (And I knew it was going to get bad right when it started, just note what I was saying in the Philadelphia-Green Bay thread) and that's been alternately horrible against the run and the pass. They gave up almost 1000 yards passing ot St. Louis and Philly combined, and almost 400 yards on the ground to Kevin Jones and Fred Taylor, while they were able to hold the Rams' running game and Westbrook, well on the ground at least. This past week's game actually had me wondering if Green Bay would win more games with another QB that would make smarter decisions with the ball. I also agree with you about the Darius fine, I'd call for a suspension NOT because he won't be able to play in any of the games, but that's usually when players will feel the sting financially as well (and thus why they always try to appeal). Guest Jason Report post Posted December 23, 2004 Hey, hey, hey........Now Brett Favre has always made dumb decisions. That's part of what makes #4 the player that he is. He makes decisions no other quarterbacks would even think of making. He takes risks nobody else takes. That's what makes Favre. Think of all the great quarterbacks in the league right now. They at least have a decent defense. Green Bay (as much as I hate to say it) has the worst defense in the league. No only do they give up yards on the ground they give up twice as much in the air. I thought they had showed some promise after the season opener against Carolina but that was not the case. I wish they would've kept McKenzie. I have no idea why they would let go such a good cornerback when they don't have many if any at all. Brett Favre cant keep chasing teams from behind. The defense needs to step up so maybe then Favre will take least risks. I think Green Bay will pull it off this week. Minnesota got a lucky win against Detroit and Green Bay showed some fire at the end of the Jacksonville game. Favre is will be Favre and hopefully the defense comes up wit something to help the team out.
Guest Vitamin X Report post Posted December 23, 2004 Green Bay doesn't have the WORST defense in the league. They're alternately horrible between a terrible run defense or a terrible pass defense, but never both at the same time, with the exception of the Titans game. Ever since Grady Jackson came back, the run defense has played well, except for the last couple weeks. I wonder how much better they'd be if only they would have been able to keep McKenzie happy and in Green Bay. But statistically speaking, they're really not that bad. At times, I think the coaching is bad, which I hate to say because I love Mike Sherman and he's done great things, but I've seen say, the Panthers play their asses off when they looked like they were in trouble, and it's amazing wtaching them with a fiery coach and smart playcalling (even if the OT playcalling in Atlanta was idiotic, that would be the lone exception) and I just don't see the same effort from Green Bay. Every performance I've seen since the Philly game has been really quite flat, though we'll see how hard they play against their two biggest rivals on the road. The actual worst defenses in the league belong to the Saints, Vikings, Colts, and Chiefs. Green Bay's is just mediocre, again which I'll blame on the coaching and the lack of a quality corner (Al Harris and Darren Sharper alone can't be relied on, because they'll just pick on Carroll/Hawthorne/whoever else is on the proverbial island) and defensive end. And a good coordinator. If the Packers don't go far in these playoffs (which they probably won't), all they need is a playmaker at defensive end and a new defensive coordinator, and of course for Favre to play another year and they'll be in the bowl next year. That is, provided that the rest of the division doesn't get better which of course they will since the NFC North is getting harder and harder to win every year.
