Guest webmasterofwrestlegame Posted January 15, 2005 Report Posted January 15, 2005 There is an interesting transcript at ESPN of a meeting / debate / discussion by Gary Hughes (Cubs Assistant GM), Eddia Bane (Angels Scouting Director), Gary Huckabay (A's stat consultant), and Voros McCraken (Red Soz stats consultant). It is based on the modern day role of the MLB club scout with the emergence of a more black/white statistical basis for drafting baseball players. The article is here: http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/columns/stor...alan&id=1963830 I thought it was very interesting, but no-one really convinced me either side of an argument. The whole stats based movement is kind of new (certainly in profile), and so it still seems like supporters blindly support it, and old school people just as quickly dismiss it. Competitive sport has so many intangibles - many mental - that to me, to recruit entirely on stats hides a lot of what makes the person up. What do you think?
