2016 Olympics go to a City in Africa?

Recommended Posts

Guest Deadbolt

I recently read that IOC President Jacuques Rogge visited Kenya last week and said if an African city bid for the 2016 games, there would be a good chance of success - if they met the requirements. Now, Kenya has said that they would be interested in bidding for the games.

No African (or South American) city has ever hosted the games. Cairo bid for the 2008 games, and Capetown, South Africa failed for 2004. But, now that South Africa is hosting the World Cup, that could be good news for big sporting events in Africa.

Discuss.

This is the western-centric bastard in me, but I'd be hard-pressed to approve of an African city getting the Olympics anytime soon.

North Africa- Casablanca, Tripoli, Cairo, and every other major Saharan Africa city is Fundamentalist Muslim Central. Think "concerns over the Athens games" times 100.

Western Africa- If it's held in Monrovia, Liberia, will "torturing the former president to death" be part of the games?

Sub-Saharan Africa- Whatever country gets the games will probably undergo about 3 revolutions between winning the bid and hosting the games. That doesn't include the high-paying "kidnapping for profit" segment of the two Congos, Rwanda, Burundi, and the rest of Central Africa.

South Africa- There's some sembalance of a stable government in Cape Town, SA, and Pretoria, SA. However, this area has one of the highest AIDS infection rates in the world and it would probably be a sick joke to count all the losers at these games who would bring this home as a booby-prize because they got a little something-something without a jimmy-hat on.

South America would be a better choice, provided that Rio or Buenos Aires could put together a good bid. Rio has a lot of the same problems as South Africa and Sub-Saharan Africa though, as there is a high AIDS rate in addition to a high crime rate.

South Africa is the only nation on the continent that can even come close to being able to host the Games.

What about Egypt?

Not a chance. The security costs alone would be too much for the Egyptian government to handle.

I think a pretty cool Olympics could be something like a dual nation type of deal. If Detroit gets its shit together I think that a Detroit-Windsor Olympics in about 20 or so years would be awesome. Keep in mind this is so far down the road, but I think with proper planning it could be pulled off

Even then, it's a reach, wouldn't you say? I just worry that something bad would happen down there.

Yes. But in 10 years they might be able to do it. Certainly better than anyone else on the continent. Brazil & Argentina both could probably do it in South America. I don't know much about Peru, so maybe they could, but you can probably count out the rest.

I laugh at the idea of Detroit-Windsor, but I believe that a joint London-Paris bid has been talked about at times, but it won't happen now that they are the favourites to win in 2012.

That was the only close cities where the travel wouldnt be as bad. London-Paris must be quite a ways away
