Guest Cerebus Report post Posted January 22, 2005 Link: Russian President Vladimir Putin is prepared to renounce a notorious 1939 pact between Nazi Germany and the Soviet Union that divided up much of eastern Europe between the two powers, Estonia's president said Thursday. The 1939 nonaggression pact named for Nazi Foreign Minister Joachim von Ribbentrop and Soviet Foreign Minister Vyacheslav Molotov was signed in secret and carved much of Eastern Europe up between the two countries, including the Baltic countries of Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania, [AND POLAND YOU TWATS! -Cerebus]which were placed under the Soviet sphere of control. ... Soviet forces occupied the Baltic states in June 1940 but were driven out by the Germans a year later. The Red Army retook the Baltics in 1944 and the three countries were reincorporated back into the Soviet Union. Russia's tense relations with Baltics Russia has invited Estonian and other Baltic leaders to Moscow on May 9 for the World War II anniversary celebrations, but only one leader, Latvian President Vaira Vike-Freiberga, has agreed to participate. They became independent in the Soviet breakup of 1991. Last week, in announcing she would travel to Moscow, Vike-Freiberga called on Russia to denounce the pact, saying that in 1945 only half of Europe could rejoice in the defeat of the Nazis and the end of occupation. So Putin is finally repudiating the treaty that his country used as an excuse to dominate, rape, and opress half a dozen countries that, interestingly enough, HE'S STILL DOING TODAY? Hoo-fucking-ray. Dobbs 3K 0 Report post Posted January 22, 2005 Wasn't it only a five year pact anyway? I could be wrong, but I thought I remember that from my history classes. I thought it was basically designed by Hitler to give him enough time to beat the Western powers before turning to Russia, anyway.

monkey 0 Report post Posted January 23, 2005 I think this really relates to the Baltic nations and an interesting little political situation. The treaty if I can remember my history legitamised the Russian annexation of the Baltic countires which had been freed after WW1. Russia recently asked the Baltic nations to celebrate WW2 anniversary which put them in a quandry. Do they celebrate the Russian defeat of Nazi Germany and thereby give a backhanded acceptance to communist Russia which spent 50 years oppressing them or do they stay away and are seen to support Nazi Germany. This is a way of saying they want to celebrate the defeat of Nazim but want Russia to acknowledge it was wrong to invade them (Baltic countries) in the first place
