The Czech Republic 0 Report post Posted January 31, 2005 The one I'll say about the games Nash missed, were 3 straight road games against Indiana, Washington, and Detroit. So Phoenix didn't lose at home to Charlotte, NO, and Toronto. But with Nash as the point guard, he's running things on the court for his team. Or in this case, not running things, and when he wasn't, Stoudamire, Marion, et al had no direction.
iggymcfly 0 Report post Posted January 31, 2005 Yeah, I'd give Nash the edge over LeBron at this point just due to the fact that the Suns are a championship contender and the Cavs really aren't at this point. I think the Cavs would be just as lost without James as the Suns were without Nash, but the fact that the Suns accomplished more with Nash should be enough to make him the frontrunner for the MVP at this point. You know, during the offseason, I said that if the Suns just resigned Nash and traded Nowitzki for Shaq, they'd be guaranteed two rings. I wish they'd done it. I guess from a financial standpoint, it's better to have a good tea for eight years, then a championship team for two years, and a mediocre team later, but with the way that Shaq and Nash have been playing this year, you can't deny that they'd be awesome together. Yeah, I totally meant the Mavs. I don't know how I managed to do that. As for the comment that Nash wouldn't be as good with Shaq because they couldn't run, I can kind of see that, but the Mavs had just as much speed as the Suns and better shooters, and they weren't as good. I don't know what the difference is, but I'd guess it's that the Suns have Marion and Amare to pick up boards which Shaq could have done as well. If the Mavs had gotten the two of them, they certainly wouldn't be the same team the Suns are. They'd probably be more like a greatly upgraded version of the Heat. They might not even have as good of a record as the Suns do right now, but come playoff time, they'd be unstoppable. This Suns team's still not going to get by San Antonio. I'm just trying to make an argument for James, and probably more so against Nash. I would like to add this.
Precious Roy 0 Report post Posted January 31, 2005 (edited) The Mavs didn't have power finishers or real sprinters. Finley and Nowitzki are finishers, but they're just as apt to be spot up jump shooters, and Nowitzki has more of the finesse game. The best play he and Nash ran was the little screen and fade because Nowitzki could catch and shoot in one motion, and he's accurate as hell. The other guys they brought in, Jamison and Walker last year, weren't really fast breakers. It wasn't so much that they were a running team that Nash created that illusion by keeping everything up-tempo in the half-court and breaking when possible. Nash has turned up the speed a couple notches with Phoenix though. Amare and Marion bring the fucking thunder and are faster than any other 4-5 combo in the West, and they leave the spot up shooting to Johnson and Richardson who trail on the break. It's a different dynamic. Oh, and Nash would definitely work well with Shaq in the half-court because he drives on unorthadox routes, knows how to hit the baseline, and would find Shaq for little dump offs, but Shaq isn't gonna run on a whole lot of breaks Edited January 31, 2005 by Precious Roy
nogoodnick 0 Report post Posted February 1, 2005 At this point I gotta give it to Steve Nash. I think Nash proved his value during his absence when the Suns were lost without him. He brings the his teamates up to levels they haven't played at. Amare is a monster with him in the lineup and even credited Nash with some of the improvement he has made. Lebron, while a statistical monster and freakishly good still has a little ways to go. He probably will finish top 3 in the end of season voting and if Nash slips up he could win. Then there's Shaq who also elevates other players around him to shine. Dwayne Wade is a phenomenal player and is still getting better but some of his improvement must be credited to having the most dominant center in the game. Also Damon Jones and Udonis Haslem have been playing excellent basketball this season with Jones being a 3 point machine and Haslem averaging nearly 10 boards per game. I think Shaq's declining stats will keep him from winning the award. Tim Duncan is a super star as well but will be overlooked because of the amazing seasons of a few other guys I already mentioned. He is a true professional and comes to play night in and night out. Reigning MVP Kevin Garnett lost a lot of votes due to the way his team has been playing.
