Guest Loss Report post Posted February 9, 2005 Slapnuts, you make a great point, and I swear to you I'm not trolling when I say this, but after all this time, I still don't understand why heterosexuals CARE what gay people do. If same-sex marriage is allowed, how will it affect straight marriages? What will the difference be? I think what this comes down to in the end is that too many people still think homosexuality is a choice, which it isn't. To those people, I ask first why anyone would choose to be gay and ask second if the people who think it's a choice are capable of making that choice themselves. A lot of people view marriage as being this sacred institution, which is funny when you think that half of marriages end in divorce anyway, and seem overly obsessed with defending it to the death. To them, gay people getting married would somehow bring down this 'great institution' or do serious damage to it, all the while ignoring the fact that heterosexuals have done a great job of that themselves. I've already explained, that this might be true for some ultra religious fanatics, but for most moderate Americans, they don't want to have an issue as simple as marriage become confusing for their children, and would rather avoid the embarassing questions that have to be answered that will follow. Cart before the horse. Civil unions should not bother anybody unless they truly have a problem accpeting differences. For now, most moderate Americans are uncomfortable with changing the mainstream ideal of marriage and taking away some of the innocence they associate with it (this is all in ideal obviously, not in reality). So just learn to compromise, and eveyone should be happy, because otherwise you'll push away the people you need to help your side gain the rights you feel you deserve. I can't help you there, I'm not making the laws here. My advice would be to really push hard for civil unions and make it clear that there should be nothing wrong with civil unions and get the public on your side there. Abandon the "marriage or bust" stance, and people will be more sympathetic. But I understand just like I'm not making the laws here, you're not the one leading the "gay rights" cause, either.
