It's a really tough call to name an absolute "best ever". I'm partial to Jimmy Page, but I wouldn't stand by that pick by any means. With that in mind I'll name a few based on categories:

originality: Hendrix

longevity: Clapton

versitility: Page

technique: Van Halen

Some other contenders for these include Beck, Iommi, Satriani, Rhodes, Harrison, and Gilmour.

"i know who the most OVERRATED is:

Jimmy Page"

Maybe if you only listen to death metal where all you have to do is hit the strings really quickly.

I also think Page is overrated.  I mean, all he did was run through the pentatonic scales... the solo for "Stairway to Heaven" is a perfect example of this.  If you know how to play guitar and know pentatonic scales, you can play the solo, as that's all there is to it.

I still enjoy Page's work, but it's still overrated.  But then, Hendrix probably is too, but I'm listening to Axis: Bold as Love right now and I'm too tired to think of anything else, especially since he's my favorite guitarist anyway.

Steve Vai

Joe Satriani

John Petrucci.

No one else is better than those three.

Hendrix and Zakk Wylde are my personal favorites...

And Rich Ward, for taking simplistic riffs and making them the most badass-sounding metal/hardcore riffs I've ever heard.

Of course i have to mention Hendrix, Vaughan, Clapton, Van Halen but my personal favourites are Johnny Marr from the Smiths and Joey Santiago from the Pixies. Both extremely underrated in terms of their influence.

There is one unfied, unversal, and indisputable answer to the question. Stevie Ray Vaughn. At least you can't argue with my basis for picking him. I mean this guy was tearing it up like no other ever had before and actually putting together interesting instrumentals and guitar solo's.

That's my biggest beef with Vai andSatriani. They are probably among the very best in the world (I think Slash is faster but they're move versitile), but a very good portion of their library isn't exactly the most attention grabbing work. Gets kind of boring, really.

But hey, for the people I would deem worthy of consideration but not worthy of the title:

Slash. My personal favourite guitarist.

Jerry Cantrell. My idol. I get to see him with Nickleback on Friday. I'm fucking pumped!

Kirk Hammet. In my opinion, "Fade To Black" is the best rock guitar solo ever with no exceptions.

Mike McCready. On of the last "old-school" style lead guitarists around these days, and if you don't know what I mean check out "Alive" and "Even Flow". In my opinion, he's a true artist.

Stone Gossard. Also with Pearl Jam, he wrote pretty much every rythym on "Ten", and I think that's an accomplishment. No other rythym player has my respect like this guy.

Izzy Stradlin. Except this guy.

Angus and Mal are one of the best guitar duos to ever play...They just read each other so well, it's like one giant guitar playing.

As far as the best guitarist? I really have to go with SRV. He was so amazing, people's jaws would drop when they heard and saw him play. He was awesome; we lost him too early...RIP SRV!

Zakk Wylde, Jon Petrucci, Kerry King/Jeff Hanneman, to a lesser extent Yngwie Malmsteen but his shit is goofy.

Sammy Haggar is better than Eddie Van Halen

oh yeah, and as far as rythm guitarists, going back to the guy that mentioned Pearl Jam, considering Izzy Stradlin wrote the majority of the really good GNR tunes, I'd put him up there in the great guitarist category, of course i've never heard his solo work so...

Yngwie Malmsteen always seemed to be more like a "smarty pants show-off" guitarist, who played really advanced stuff just because he could.  I could be wrong though, but anyone with an album named Concerto Suite for Electric Guitar is really asking for it.

I would say Yngwie Malmsteen, but if he steals classical riffs from Bach and Mozart, and calling them his own...I have no respect for him.
