Best Baseball Sites

Recommended Posts

Spring training is beginning soon, and I'm eagerly anticipating the season's start. My excitement hasn't died down much since the Series ended.

The only sites I really go to for baseball coverage are MLB.com and ESPN.com, along with random columns on Inside Pulse and 411Mania. What are some sites I could go to to read up on various baseball related things?

I'm looking for a variety of stuff- History, stats, stories from the clubhouse, predictions for the upcoming season, predictions from past seasons (if they're still around), interviews, videos- The works.

I've realized that, despite watching baseball for a decade now, I know very little in comparison to a lot of fans. Sadly, I'm too old to get a chance to actually play the game competitively, but at least I can enjoy learning more about the ones who have had that experience.

Start with my TSM columns. Failing that...

www.baseball-reference.com

If you need any statistic throughout history, this is the place to go. Everything's cross-linked, and its a lot of fun to browse. Want to view the top 50 home run hitters in Chicago Cubs history? It's there.

www.baseballthinkfactory.org

The leading baseball blog/message board, for the thinking fan.

http://www.thehardballtimes.com/

One of the best amateur analysis sites on the internet. They do create a lot of historical articles.

all-baseball.com

Another terrific blog site, hosting ten of the best.

For an introduction to the work of Bill James, check out Richard Lederer's review of his annual Abstracts.

http://www.baseballamerica.com

A fabulous site that focuses on the minor league system of MLB with articles and up to date statistics. They also cover the Winter leagues as well as the independent leagues. Some of the content is pay content but you can still find a variety of articles that are free. The Top 10 Prospects articles are definitely worth checking out.

Another great site that will give you major and minor league stats for a variety of players. Thus far, the farthest I've seen minor league stats go back was in the late 60's. You can also see how current minor leaguers have done in their minor league career or even how guys like Pujols and Chipper Jones did in the minors.

In addition to the other sites listed above:

Baseball Hall of Fame: Dressed to the Nines

Want to see what uniforms the Dodgers wore in 1916? Or the Phillies in 1979? There's a uniform database created with drawings from Marc Okkonen’s book Baseball Uniforms of the 20th Century (the 1993 and before uniforms are from that book, the 1994 and after are from the author but not in the book, which was published in 1993 or 1994)

Dodger Blues

Even if you're not a Dodger fan, this is fucking hilarious.

This is more for the Mets fan:

The Ultimate Mets Database

Has every Met who's played a Major League game. Also a comment/memories thread for maybe 90% of the players. Some ex-players have appeared on their own thread.
