NYWC Rampage

2/26/05

-----------------------------------------

On February 26, NYWC Rampage kicked it up another notch as fans were treated to not one, not two, but three bonafide wrestling superstars in one night! While Tommy Dreamer was expected to be on hand to dish out a little violence, everyone was caught by surpise when the show was interrupted by both Raven and Mick Foley!

As if that weren't enough, the action between NYWC regulars was fast and furious all night. Mike Mondo, just days after signing a developmental contract with WWE, battled his way to a title shot against Joey Matthews on March 26, while the Interstate Champ Joey Braggiol and Tag Champs Dickie Rodz & Mason Raige all retained their titles. And in a shocking moment, Tyler Payne turned on his partner Wayne, breaking Wayne's nose in the process!

Mikey Whipwreck vs. Crusher Doogan

This was a match that was a long time coming... Whipwreck and Doogan had been at each other's throats for over a year now, and the animosity was at its boiling point. But before the ring announcer could even finish the opening introductions, Crusher and Mikey were already brawling down the runway and straight into the ring! In fact, no match ever took place, as the two grappled with each other through the ropes, over the railing and into the crowd. And that's where they ran into Ru Starr.

Ru Starr had been banished from the company by Whipwreck after throwing the now-retired NYWC Light-Heavyweight title into the garbage, but nobody could stop him from buying a ticket to the event. Starr and Crusher immediately teamed up on Mikey, and just as all hope seemed lost for the commissioner, Raven arrived out of nowhere to clean house! However, Mikey's savior turned out to be just another foe, as Raven nailed him with the Raven Effect and left the entire building completely bewildered.

#1 CONTENDER - NYWC INTERSTATE CHAMPIONSHIP

Rob Eckos vs. Josh Daniels vs. Mike Tobin vs. Matt Striker

Coming off a difficult defeat at the hands of Kurt Angle on WWE television, Matt Striker was looking to make his presence felt in the NYWC by injecting himself into a 3-way matchup for an Interstate Title #1 contender spot. Eckos, Daniels and Tobin were all up to the task, so the match was officially declared a 4-way. While each man came very close to victory, Striker eventually scored the win to earn him a shot at the NYWC Interstate Championship next month!

6-MAN TAG TEAM MATCH

Michael Sain, Nuke & Tony Burma w/ Crusher Doogan vs.

Brett Matthews, Brian Myers & Tommy Dreamer

Michael Sain made his NYWC return along with Nuke and Tony Burma to take on Brett Matthews and Brian Myers, formerly of The RatPak. Crusher Doogan, who had recovered from his earlier brawl and was in the corner of Sain, Nuke and Burma, asked the new tag team where their third man was. This prompted Matthews and Myers to head backstage and return with... Tommy Dreamer!

An exciting match ensued, and in the end, it was Matthews, Myers and Dreamer coming out on top. As usual, Doogan's squad wouldn't stand for this, and began a post-match beatdown that seemed like it would last forever. But the attack was brought to an abrupt end when out from the curtain walked Mick Foley! Foley immediately laid down the law, and he and Dreamer teamed up to deliver Sockos to Sain and Burma! These two icons then took the microphone and stood side-by-side and bid farewell to the crowd with a chorus of "Have a Nice Day!"

QUALIFYING MATCHUP #1

Grim Reefer vs. Mike Mondo

This was the first of two qualifying matchups that would determine who would move on to the main event to compete for a shot at the NYWC Championship. Grim Reefer and Mike Mondo, two former NYWC champions, fought tooth-and-nail in a fiercely competitive matchup. Despite giving it his all, and despite hitting Mondo with a huge top-rope splash, Reefer did not have enough to seal the victory. Mondo eventually scored the pinfall and moved on to the next round of competition!

QUALIFYING MATCHUP #1

Quiet Storm vs. Amazing Red

In the second qualifying match, Quiet Storm took on Amazing Red in a contest that turned out to be a marathon of near-falls and close calls! Toward the end of the match, Red unleashed a series of high-impact moves including his patented standing Shooting Star Press, but incredibly, it was not enough to keep Quiet Storm down. Storm would then capture Red in a precarious position and slam him headfirst to the mat for the pin and the win!

Upper Class Rednex vs. Wayne & Tyler Payne

This match barely had a chance to get underway before it was interrupted by Tyler Payne's shocking betrayal of his partner, Wayne. Payne took his partner and delivered a devastating TKO that broke Wayne's nose and sent blood gushing down his face. Payne clearly blamed Wayne's relative chubbiness for their loss of the tag titles last month, exclaiming "Fat is BAD!" This brought the champion of corpulence, Mega, to the ring for a confrontation. Mega promptly chokeslammed Payne to the mat and helped a bloodied Wayne to the back.

Of course, Nick Noshus and Southern Vinny Stylin were now without opponents, but instead of getting the night off, they were challenged by the Dead Presidents! This match also began normally, but soon developed into a free-for-all that spilled into the audience and never returned to the ring. Even now, nobody knows what happened to these competitors as they fought their way through the building.

Aerial Assault vs. S.A.T.

In their NYWC debut, the Spanish Announce Team (Joel and Jose Maximo), otherwise known at the S.A.T.s, took on Javi-Air and James Newblood, now dubbed Aerial Assault. This matchup, as is typical for Aerial Assault, was a display of reckless moves and sheer excitement. However, the Maximo brothers have been in the business for a long time. In the end, Joel and Jose were able to hold their opponents down long enough to utilize their arsenal of skills and experience to pick up the victory in their first NYWC match!

NYWC TAG TEAM CHAMPIONSHIPS

All Money Is Legal vs. Dickie Rodz & Mason Raige ©

For the past month, Dickie Rodz and Mason Raige sat on top of the world as the new NYWC Tag Team Champions, but now they would have to defend their belts against a constant barrage of hungry tag teams. First on the list was All Money Is Legal, who had won an 8-man tag match at the Psycho Circus to earn the title shot.

While A.M.I.L. fought valiantly, the strength of Mason Raige and the cunning of Dickie Rodz proved to be too much to handle. The match ended when Mason Raige tossed one member of A.M.I.L. into the other, and finished the contest with a Doomsday Device from Dickie Rodz. The belts are now safe for another month, but there's no telling who will challenge for the belts next time!

NYWC INTERSTATE CHAMPIONSHIP

Lamar Braxton Porter vs. Joey Braggiol © w/ Prince Charles

In a rematch from the Psycho Circus, Joey Braggiol once again defended his title against former tag team partner Lamar Braxton Porter. Much like the previous encounter, this was an extremely physical affair, with two men ranging around the 300-pound mark going toe-to-toe. The slugfest ended when Joey Braggiol climbed to the top rope and splashed his ex-teammate through a table to score the pin and retain the belt!

Spyder & Bad Boy w/ Poison vs. Damien Dragon & Ken Scampi w/ Tara Charisma

This match marked the debut of Bad Boy, along with his manager Poison, as he teamed with Spyder to take on the duo of Disturbed Damien Dragon and Ken Scampi. With Tara Charisma at ringside, Scampi and Dragon made their best attempt to fend off the assault, but the combined force of Spyder and Bad Boy was too much for the offbeat impromptu duo. Spyder and Bad Boy not only won the match, but they added further injury by virtually mauling Tara Charisma in the middle of the ring. This was a very impressive start for Bad Boy, and another important victory for the veteran Spyder.

#1 CONTENDER - NYWC CHAMPIONSHIP

Quiet Storm vs. Mike Mondo

While both men were clearly exhausted from their previous matches, the road to the title went through this night's main event, and neither competitor was ready to give up. Mondo and Storm had an incredible battle, going back and forth from start to finish. Quiet Storm utilized a variety of punishing submission moves, but Mondo was remarkably resilient despite suffering repeated punishment to his arm.

The end came when, out of nowhere, Mondo hoisted Storm into the air and delivered a tremendous gutbuster that knocked every last bit of wind out of him. Mondo made the pin, picked up the victory, and will move on to face Joey Matthews in March for the NYWC Championship!
