Triple-H and Wrestlemania

Recommended Posts

I know how you feel Slayer. I don't hate HHH either. He is good at what he does, but he has been overexposed so much that I am just plain bored of him. Once Benoit beat him last year, that's all I wanted from HHH to begin with and my hate went with it. Now he's just dull. I'm far more likely to simply ignore a HHH defense than I am angry when he goes over someone else. The only reason I even make it a habit to watch RAW anymore is because of Batista and it happens to be the show that Benoit is on and he's my favourite wrestler. I ignore pretty much every other segment as it is. Jack Bauer is more interesting than HHH.

Well, I've done my fair share of bashing and HHHating, but I'll put myself in the "bored of him" group. More than anything, it has been a HHH fest on RAW. They paint him as this man-god who's smarter, stronger, and basically better than everyone else. He's been doing the same shtick for years (what, since DX?) apart from his near obligatory face run during his return from the quad injury.

Worst of all (IMO), no one ever gets the best of him for long, and he wins a gross majority of his feuds. I always thought that feuds built up the heel through various tactics to make it seem like the face was up against impossible odds. However, the plucky face kept pushing and striving, and eventually overcame the heel. HHH blows that formula up (Booker T, Orton, HBK) whenever possible. The last face I can remember that really "won" a feud with HHH was Benoit. And that was just so he could transition the belt to Orton who would drop it to......a heel HHH.

So far he's actually acted like a cowardly heel against Batista (who, admittedly, is one of the few "faces" that looks like he can face HHH on more than even terms). I'll wait and see what the rest of the buildup does though. I'm betting he gets the better of Batista this week, and I'll let it slide since he is the champ and all. What happens during the rest of the buildup however will go a long way towards either changing or confirming my opinion of him.

With HHH, you have a big musclehead with no real character who routinely spends 20 minute segments talking about how great he is.

"I'm so great! I'm among the greatest of all time! I can't believe how legendary I am! Don't even bother challenging me because I'm greater than you! I am great!"

This "character" that is unremarkable by itself is rendered even more unimpressive when it's practically shared by most of the men's roster.

Actually, I'd have to agree with that completely. Ever since he started wearing dress shirts to try to get heel heat after he turned on HBK, his character's been really bland. The thug type that will do anything to get the better of his opponent (hit them with sledgehammers, get them run over by a car, etc.) was a lot stronger.

At this point, his character's basically heel champion. He's doing a good job in the Batista feud, but after that's done, I think he needs to stay away from the title for along time, or go to Smackdown, or turn face, or something, because it just seems like this cocky heel that keeps the title gimmick has really run its course.

This question of main events should not deal with the last match on the card.

Wrestle War 89, Flair vs. Steamboat, NWA title match, BY FAR the most hyped and most remembered match on the card.

It was match #7 on a 9-match card. U.S. tag team champs "Hot Stuff" Eddie Gilbert & Rick Steiner beat "Gamesmaster" Kevin Sullivan & Dangerous Danny Spivey in the last match on the card, but I doubt anyone would call that the 'main event' of the show.

Bottom line, I think in the aforementioned examples (the 6-way ladder match and Angle-HBK) the announcers meant it like how they could be 'the main event anywhere in the country,' as Gorilla Monsoon would put it. This isn't a SuperBrawl 2000 situation; either of those matches could (concievably) main-event a PPV on their own.
