Guest ken adams Report post Posted March 22, 2005 Queen A Night at the Opera- I've grown to really love this album, I probably end up listening to it once a week. What I love about the album is the effortless switching of musical styles and genre's. You start with a rather glam/heavy rock tune (Death on Two Legs) move into a gaunty pop melody (Lazing on a Sunday Afternoon) to a straight on rocker (I'm in Love with My Car) and so forth, with 2 centerpiece epics standing out, one by Brian May (The Prophet's Song) one by Freddie Mercury (Bohemian's Rhapsody). Just a joy of music to listen to each time. What about "39", sung by Brian May? Definitely his best song. Other great albums: GnR - Appetite Zakk Wylde - Book Of Shadows Tesla - Mechanical Resonance Aerosmith - Toys In The Attic, Rocks Van Halen - Fair Warning Tesla is one of the most underrated bands. Even though they came from the 80's, they were NOT a hairband, they've written socially conscience lyrics, know how to play their instruments, aren't afraid to take chances (acoustic cd, acoustic tour) have fans on stage with them (sitting & playing with), and are the most approachable people. They also still pack in the mid-sized venues with almost no airplay. Out of all the older rock bands to release cd's today, Tesla is the only one that can sound current, yet still sound like themselves. Metal Sludge doesn't have anything bad to say about them, and they rip on everyone. Check them out if you can.

Slayer 0 Report post Posted March 25, 2005 My favorite CDs are hard to say. My top selection five years ago is not the same as three years ago is not the same as even a year ago, so I rifled through my CD collection (600+), thinking about what CDs I've always come back to time and time again, no matter what the genre, or what mood I may be in. Metal Children of Bodom - Hatebreeder Death - Symbolic Fates Warning - Parallels Judas Priest - Defenders of the Faith Judas Priest - Painkiller My Dying Bride - Turn Loose the Swans Nevermore - Nevermore Paradise Lost - Draconian Times Savatage - Streets Virgin Steele - Marriage of Heaven and Hell Part I Non-Metal (excluding Zappa) Arena - The Visitor IQ - Subterranea King Crimson - Absent Lovers Marillion - The Thieving Magpie Marillion - Made Again Peter Gabriel - Plays Live Zappa Broadway the Hard Way Jazz From Hell Joe's Garage Shiek Yerbouti You Are What You Is I would say the YCDTOSA series, but with 182 songs on 12 CDs, you're going to have some big gaps of quality in there. There are some CDs which are fairly flawless from beginning to end though (Vol 2 Disc 1, Vol 4 Disc 2 and Vol 5 Disc 2 specifically)
Art Sandusky 0 Report post Posted March 25, 2005 I got The Crystal Method's Vegas the other day, and it's honestly in my top five favorites ever. Last gasp for techno in the mainstream since, but what a way to go out.
Guest Agent of Oblivion Report post Posted March 26, 2005 I would say the YCDTOSA series, but with 182 songs on 12 CDs, you're going to have some big gaps of quality in there. There are some CDs which are fairly flawless from beginning to end though (Vol 2 Disc 1, Vol 4 Disc 2 and Vol 5 Disc 2 specifically) Whatever. Disc 2 kills Disc 1 on Vol 2. Everything from "Satumaa" on is probably my favorite performance he's done. "Approximate" and "Duprees Paradise" are pretty good in their own right, the latter being more a collection of moments. I'm not big on Vol 3. The weakest of the 4 I've heard. 1, 2, 3, and 5.
Slayer 0 Report post Posted March 26, 2005 For me, "Approximate" and "Dupree's Paradise" wear out their welcome significantly short of their total running time, and since those two comprise a little over half the CD, I would pretty much steer clear of the CD as a whole if it wasn't for "Whipping Floss" (the lone high point of the CD). Not to mention that he criminally cut short "Big Swifty" at the end. The problem I thinik most people had with Vol 3 was that most of the songs were from the '84 tour, which a lot of Zappa fans hate because of Alan Zavod and his synth get-up. On the other hand, the '84 tour was his strongest vocally, with Ike Willis, Ray White and Bobby Martin singing some killer harmonies
