The Grambling State Band

So last night I went to see the Oklahoma City Yard Dawgz. It's an AFL2 team owned by Barry Switzer(yeah i hate the name too).

Anyways they had the Grambling State band there to play before the game, after the game, and at halftime.

I'd never seen this band and my god they were awesome. Has anyone ever seen them live? It's probably one of the coolest performances and the best college bands I've ever seen.

How long have they been doing that?

No idea, but a lot of southern schools have awesome bands. If there's a college in Mississippi that isn't USM, Ole Miss, or MSU, chances are they've got a good band.

All of the schools in the SWAC (Grambling, Southern, Prarie View, etc.) tend to have impressive bands.

 

In the case of Prarie View, the band was tougher than their football team and actually got into a halftime brawl with the Southern band.

Before UVA got a marching band this year, we used to bring in outside bands from Hampton and the like. My favorite was the Virginia State Trojan Explosion, which is one of the best names I've ever seen for anything.

They kept saying Grambling was the best in the country. Don't people go to the football games and leave at halftime after they see the band?

 

I know at OU games they'd be like "now stick around for a special concert by the Pride of Oklahoma!" and everyone would be like "fuck this" and leave. But I imagine at these southern schools an ass doesn't leave the seats.

Dama, if you really like that kind of stuff, try to find a Battle of the Bands contest. Like in Drumline.

My university played Grambling at our home turf in 2001 (Nicholls State in Thibodaux, LA if anyone gives a rats ass).

 

Grambling demanded something like $20,000 to drive six hours from Grambling to Thibodaux for a half time show.

 

The A.D. basically told them to screw off and just hired a New Orleans marching band (Grambling Light if you ask me) and we laughed at them.

 

For the record, I spent 4 years in the University bands myself, and we were more Military band oriented in that we do heel to toe roll stepping and all the Core type stuff as opposed to the dancing and acting silly. The "show band" stuff is pretty irritating to me.

 

 

 

The point to all this though is I've seen them on TV and all, and they themselves believe in their own hype so much to the point that they wanted to charge an in state school twenty grand.
