Styles 0 Report post Posted May 9, 2005 For anyone just tuning in you haven't missed much, he states that it's hard to build momentum airing on FSN at 4 pm on Fridays but it's better then no TV. He stated he wants to help the young guys and see the company succeed for them. He tells a story about how over the Rock and Roll Express were and that hundreds of fans were lined up outside a restaurant to get thier autograph and he wants to get TNA's young guys to that level. He actually mentions CM Punk in passing as someone he's really high on, and then briefly mentions how sad it was for Chris Candido to die after overcoming his demons. Now theyre at break. RedJed 0 Report post Posted May 9, 2005 Anymore news on the Rhodes appearance? I can't believe Rhodes went on the show knowing his thoughts on the sheets in general and how Meltzer's thoughts on TNA are.
Styles 0 Report post Posted May 9, 2005 Pretty much what I said was all that was talked about TNA. The rest was him talking about the old days with Dick Murdoch and how the business used to be and stuff. He was really complimentary towards Dave and Brian and respectful of what they do... TNABaddboi 0 Report post Posted May 10, 2005 Here's a full report from the Observer: Wrestling Observer Live Report Airdate: (08/05/2005) Hosts: Dave Meltzer & Bryan Alvarez Guest: Dusty Rhodes Bryan joins us for the first time in a while...the longest Dave and Bryan haven't talked to each other in quite some time. The death of Chris Candido is the first subject. Dave emphasises the tragedy of the death and how nice of a guy he really was. A lot of people will say that whenever somebody dies, but how in this case it really is true. Dave talks about how Candido grew up a fan of wrestling as compared to a lot of other guys. He really had no enemies...he was perhaps his own worst enemy. Dave and Bryan talk about the freak circumstances of the death and how nobody really saw it coming. Commercials. It's been a big month...UFC, Spike Deal, Mania buyrate, Lockdown, Monday's RAW! Dave talks about the upcoming PPVs. Dave talks about the big task ahead for JBL and John Cena. Dave says you lose a lot of drama in an I Quit match (near falls etc.) and how an interview talking about an I Quit match like Cena did on Thursday and then saying there are no no submissions is ridiculous. After not having a great match at Mania, this will be even harder. Bryan thought UFC was well worth the money. Dave and Bryan question whether Randy Couture's new girlfriend made any difference to the outcome of the match as has been raised by a lot of people. They refer to Mark Coleman's mother's poor health costing him a fight some time back. Bryan says how great Cauliflower Alley was. Bryan really enjoyed Monday's RAW as well, specifically the HBK-Benjamin match. They both rave about the execution of the superkick that ended the match. Dave says it's been a good year for wrestling quality...maybe no 5 star matches, but plenty of 4 stars. Bryan has the Mania DVD. It features all the trailers and outtakes. The entire Hall Of Fame ceremony is included. The Iron Sheik is incredible! Bryan hasn't watched it all yet. This Monday on RAW is Kane-Benoit and Edge-HBK. They both agree that it wasn't the week for Christian to be squashed by Kane. They mention his poor winning record on RAW, and how it doesn't help a potential jump and Cena feud. Commercials. Dave brings up the Eddie Guerrero heel turn. Dave thought the execution was good, but whether it was the right idea. Bryan was initially against it, but he likes the idea of a feud with Rey Mysterio. Dave says that once JBL is out of the way, Cena vs. Angle and Cena vs. Guerrero could cover six months worth of programming. On this week's OVW TV, Maria interviews The Heartbreakers. Dave says how WWE has completely ruined the act. They talk about how you get some really good but some really bad on OVW TV. Phonecalls...James in Tallahassee. He mentions how much of a shame the Candido death is. He asks how Tammy is doing? Dave says Tammy is keeping a strong face in public. She will be staying with Francine for a while. Dave was not able to attend the funeral. Dave, Bryan, and James all discuss the fluke nature of the death and how it would not have been unexpected for a period of time, but it was a shock when it did happen. Dave left a message for Chris on the Monday after the operation and he was to be a guest in a couple of weeks. Even though Chris would sometimes refer to Tammy as his wife, Dave thinks that they were never legally married to answer James' question. They talk about how the Impact show was a nice tribute, but very sad nonetheless. James gives kudos to HBK-Benjamin and we're out... Commercials. Dusty Rhodes joins the show. Dusty: Reflections Of An American Dream is out now. Dusty is doing great, although a bit sore after wrestling Terry Funk last night. Dave asks about working the Carolina nostalgia shows. Dusty says how well they are promoted by Tony Hunter and how they are packing buildings. Bryan asks if the audience is any different. Dusty says there are a lot of older fans, but also plenty of young kids. Dusty really enjoys doing them. Terry Funk as well. Dave mentions the 70s and 80s and whether they ever stopped and thought how they were making history. Dusty says he has always been a mark for the business and that in '75 and '76, he thought they were changing history. It was a similar feeling when he saw all the yellow foam fingers in the 80s. Dusty talks about the importance of characterisation. Dusty says he never realised just how big it was until he is sitting around with someone like Terry just talking about old stories. We move onto TNA and the handicap of poor television. Dusty hopes a change is coming, and says he can't see it succeeding without a better timeslot. Dusty says it would be a shame because there is so much good young talent. Dusty brings up the importance of arena shows, but it is impossible to do them with the current slot. Dusty says that Lockdown was tough, but that the guys stepped up to the plate. He says it was a pity more people didn't buy into it. Dusty says the internet fans didn't really buy into it and they are a crucial audience right now. Talks about how effective Christopher Daniels is as a heel. Dusty says that as well as Jeff Jarrett has done, he knew that AJ Styles and Abyss were the two men to bring it home at Lockdown. Dusty reiterates that they are talking with people about TV and that everyone is hopeful. Dusty talks about seeing guys like Zebra Kid, Destroyer and the original Gorgeous George as a kid when his dad used to take him to the wrestling shows in Austin. Dusty talks about all the greats who came from West Texas State University. A bit of reminiscing, but it's time for the news...and time for me to get some food! Newsbreak Time for hour number two. You can buy Dusty's book from all the regular places (Amazon, Highspots, etc.). Dave brings up Dick Murdoch. After Dusty left Dallas, he went to Kansas City and that was when they were first partnered up. They lived together on the roads and were inseparable. Murdoch had a knack for having nights when he was really on and some when he really wasn't on. Dusty says how the book is dedicated to him. Dusty rates him very highly. Commercials. (If someone can explain to me who "Larry The Cable Guy" is, I would appreciate it!) Dusty's career started in November 1968. For most of his career, Dusty was a babyface, but he was a heel for the first six years of his career. Dave remembers when Dusty and Murdoch became default babyfaces in the AWA when they feuded with Stevens and Bockwinkel. Mark Lewin said to Dusty that the best babyfaces are those who get over as great heels. Dave brings up Dusty's son, Cody. Cody loves theatre and acting and really has a knack for it. He went with studying acting instead of taking up collegiate wrestling. Cody met Vince McMahon when he was 16. Cody said that he would love to wrestle for the WWE at the time. He really likes Benoit, Orton and Angle and now really likes AJ Styles. However, he never took that path. Talk turns to Chris Candido. Chris emailed Dave a few weeks ago saying how happy he was with his career and how Dusty had saved his life. Dusty said Chris saved his own life. Dusty watched him at a lot of independent shows, saw his determination, and wanted to bring him in. There was only one way he would be fired...if he showed up in poor condition. They spent a lot of time with each other. Dusty had just started to get a lot of cool things happening for him and The Naturals. Dusty talks about his determination to come back. Dusty thought the closing graphic (with him hugging the belts) on Impact was fitting as he went out on top and wishes he had have had a longer time with him. A real inspiration to him. Dave recaps the Candido situation as there have been a few calls off the air from those who were not fully aware of the details. Commercials. This Sunday is Hard Justice with Jarrett-Styles, DDP-Waltman vs. Monty Brown- Outlaw and Daniels-Shocker. Dusty is looking for as bit of crossover with Tito Ortiz. He is a guy with a lot of charisma. Dusty says he would love to give this a bit more time to build up, but they just don't have it. Dusty says he thinks this is better than bringing in an 'old guy', something from out of the box. Bryan asks if Ortiz will continue to appear. Dusty says he would love to use him following the PPV, but that is completely up to Ortiz. Dusty says you need something different after 8 cage matches. Dusty mentions the upcoming video package for AJ Styles. Dave mentions the pressure to produce results quickly, but how important the slow build is as has been evidenced by the success of the HHH- Batista feud. However, you don't want to waste angles if you think there may be a better TV time around the corner. Dave asks to compare the pressures of booking TNA to booking for Crockett. Dusty says it's a very tough situation...but exciting at the same time. Dusty says he hopes the TV execs can see the potential in the product. He enjoys the fight of trying to make it. Back to the 80s and Vince going national. Dusty says how magical an era it was in 1986 and 1987. Dave asks when Dusty sensed the tide was turning in the war between Crockett and McMahon. Dusty says when Crockett sold to corporate America, that was the first big problem. He says Hulkamania was a stroke of genius. For wrestling to get to that level again, TNA has to move in that direction or risk end up being another ECW. He wonders where the new stars are going to come from if that unfortunately happens. They need a stage. Commercials. Dennis from South Carolina calls. Dennis saw the Funk-Rhodes match last night. It was awesome! Dusty says it was a lot of fun. Dennis praises the Carolina shows (carolinachampionshipwrestling.com). There is a Starrcade tribute show in November. Dusty talks about the original Starrcade. Dusty says one of his favourite people to be around is Jeff Hardy. He thinks Abyss is one of the biggest big men in the business. Dusty thanks Dennis for his support. Bryan asks about Dusty's physical condition. Cody has got Dusty into training. He recently had a physical and everything is okay. Dusty has written a screenplay for a movie which is his next big goal. It's a football movie...a Vietnam veteran who stalks a cheerleader. He's also working on a TV pilot called Dusty's place...similar to Cheers. Dusty also has a website (dustyrhodeswrestling.com). Dusty really wants to see TNA work. He thinks the 6 sided ring has worked out well. He is very high on Shocker. He hopes to tap into the Latino audience. Bryan asks about coaching on interviews. Dusty has been working with AJ Styles a lot. He is trying to bring his natural great personality out of him. That's the one thing missing with him right now. Dusty jumps back to Crockett. He says when Magnum TA went down, that was another big loss. He saw him as the next Hogan. He says that era was no different to now. The interviews are as important as the in-ring product. Dusty doesn't like long backstage interviews, but gave Raven extra time this week because it was such a great interview. Back to Crockett again. Dave thinks escalating TV bills helped kill Crockett. It was the same thing with Smoky Mountain. It was the money needed to break into new markets that killed a lot of companies. Dusty thinks that has changed the industry more than anything else. Commercial. Bob in Pittsburgh calls in. Bob talks about the first run in the WWF with Billy Graham. He thought they had great chemistry. Dusty says it was something you couldn't explain...it was magic. Dusty says a lot of people remember the polka dots era, but that era with Graham was his real era. That part of the WWF was Dusty's part. The polka dots era was Vince's part. From the neck down it was Vince, from the neck up it was Dusty. It was actually Dusty and Pat Patterson's idea so the idea that Vince tried to sabotage his career or was making fun of him is untrue. He said it was just a bit of fun and some easy money. Although, he had some great success with Big Bossman in a series of cage matches. Dave wraps it up as it is time to go. Well, that's my first go at recapping this so let me know if it is informative for those who don't get to listen to the show.

Styles 0 Report post Posted May 10, 2005 I don't see anything about CM Punk in that recap. I doubt Dusty even knows who CM Punk is He mentioned it very briefly before they went to a break when asked about the young guys on the indy scene he likes and he mentioned Styles and CM Punk and said he really liked his character... Guest Desperate Housewife Report post Posted May 10, 2005 Worked shows with him? "Who's the midget in an ME Program?" In Dustyspeak, of course. And also, if he's talking about young guys on "the indy scene" and mentions Styles, doesn't that go against TNA, who, arent, an Indy Fed. Or so they think Backstage News: Rhodes-TNA Booker, Hardy News, & More Source: The Torch On a related Dusty Rhodes note, he reportedly first spoke out publicly against the idea of bringing in former WWE stars Matt Hardy and Rhyno into the company once their 90 day no compete clauses run up. Rhodes later changed his thoughts on that after discovering the Jarrett's were very interested in bringing in Matt Hardy to reunite him with his brother Jeff (who has been with TNA since last summer) and no doubt capitalize on his name value at this point given the chants heard at every WWE event since his release. LucharesuFan619 0 Report post Posted May 11, 2005 I don't see anything about CM Punk in that recap. I doubt Dusty even knows who CM Punk is Dusty's worked ROH shows that featured Punk. So shut up. That reminded me of something funny I heard on Mike Trash's Trash Talking Radio show when Sandman was on. He was asked something like who he thinks is the future of hardcore wrestling and if he agrees that it's someone like Nick Mondo, Necro Butcher, Madman Pondo, etc. And he starts off by saying something like, "First of all, I've never heard've any 'Nick Mondo'. As for the other guys..." And he's worked Mondo before in a 3-way with Dino Bambino. Sorry for that ramble. Just reminded me of that.
