opening of Happiness of the Katakuris (download)

Recommended Posts

It's the opening to a musical directed by Takashi Miike. I just saw Gozu the other day and that movie is fucked up. It's Miike being David Lynch, and it's just bizarre. So far I've seen Fudoh, Audition, Ichi the Killer, Gozu, Visitor Q, and Dead or Alive. I'm hoping to see the rest of Happiness of the Katakuris, Izo, and Zebraman this week.

I was given the Dead or Alive trilogy as a gift over this weekend ... so far I've only watched the original, and I have to admit I was kind of let down. The trailer is all sorts of awesome, and while the movie itself is well done and all, it's not as great as I'd thought it'd be. I wouldn't say it's bad or anything, just not as great as I'd hoped.

I'm going to wait a week before watching the sequel, though, to see if part 1 grows on me at all.

You will continue to be disappointed by shitty movies that get endless hype because of how fucked up they are. Ichi the Killer is kinda cool but for the most part, those big cult gorefest are crappy ass movies that are adapted from good books.

dead or alive 2 and 3 aren't gorefests though. Part Two is the best IMO, I loved the storyline and the eventual ending. The third one was the worst of the three, suffering from a far too low budget for that kind of Sci-Fi scenario. The story was nothing special as well.

I recommend Audition, Visitor Q, Ichi the Killer, Dead or Alive, and Fudoh. Also, the film Oldboy was pretty fucked up too.

Miike didn't do Oldboy though, it was done by a better director IMO, Chan-wook Park. They both did shorts for Three Extremes though so they are linked.

Ichii was good in a weird perverted sorta way. How can you not like a movie where the title rises up from a puddle of jizz?

I NEED to see Audition. They had it ranked pretty high on Bravos best Horror movie countdown thing a few weeks back. Which is odd (that it ranked so high, I think at 13 out of 100) since most American movie goers probably haven't seen it.

You might be disappointed. Half the point of Audition is not knowing it's a horror movie going in. But since you already know, have some fun and invite a bunch of people over to watch this new Japanese romantic comedy you found. I would tell people it was "a romantic comedy with a twist". Makes repeat viewings much fun.

Guest Agent of Oblivion

I just watched Happiness of the Katakuris on Sundance channel last night, and it's easily my new favorite movie other than Caveman.

Ripper, I hadn't heard much about DoA until I saw the beginning part here on TSM. The beginning made it look action packed, where as it's primarly walking and talking scenes with occasional action. Not a bad movie, just not what I expected. Now that I've heard positive things about pt 2 (thanks, Bump Machine) I'm more looking forward to checking it out.

The used real jism for that scene ... further adding to the awesome. And I agree with La Parka, you're going to be disapointed if you're only going by Audition's place on the Bravo list ... it's a ton of build-up for very little anything, and the Bravo commentary spoiled the most 'shocking' parts. It's still a good movie, though, so I'd still recommend checking it out.
