krease Posted November 7, 2005 Report Posted November 7, 2005 Seems the copy protection software the Sony is using essentially behaves like a virus: it pretends its from somewhere else, cloaks itself from the OS, scans your system processes, contact's Sony's webpage, and may crash your system... Sony has gone and pretty much released a rootkit on their music CDs. http://www.sysinternals.com/blog/2005/10/s...tal-rights.html Follow up to the rootkit. http://www.sysinternals.com/blog/2005/11/m...decloaking.html And already some one is using the rootkit to cheat at WoW. http://www.theregister.co.uk/2005/11/04/secfocus_wow_bot/ Basically the gist of it is Sony installs a rootkit on Windows PCs that hides files from the operating system that begin with $sys$. Apparently it does some nasty things with the 64bit version of Windows XP as well.
Slayer Posted November 7, 2005 Report Posted November 7, 2005 This is why the "fantasy" of an all-digital-medium (as put forth by big media companies) concerns me greatly
krease Posted November 7, 2005 Author Report Posted November 7, 2005 The BBC has picked up the story as well: http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/technology/4400148.stm It's a bit easier of a read for those a little less technically inclined...
