History of TNA.....

Recommended Posts

So yeah I've never watched this promotion before. I'm tired of WWE and I watched the Primetime special and I enjoyed it.

Where can I learn about the history of this promotion? Like I remember when it first started but I don't know anything about it or title histories or who has been in the promotion or past angles or anything.

All I know about Abyss is that every time I see or hear someone compare him to Andre his joke of a rip off character becomes even more laughable.

The guy can work yes. But Andre? Give me a fucking break. The first time people see him they think Kane/Mankind and until that's fixed he'll always look like a 2nd rate wrestler.

Who has ever compared Abyss to Andre?

Larry Zybsko for starters and I read it in someone's post where they said think of him (Abyss) like Vader or Andre.

here's the video with larry's quote

I've never put much value on what Larry The Shill has to say. And do you remember what poster compared Abyss to Andre? I could see comparing Abyss to Vader, though that is still a stretch, but Abyss to Andre? Someone would have to be on something to compare the two.

Vader comparison is somewhat understandable if you are going for that "big monster who can move and delivering a beating" arguement. Work wise, it's like comparing Joe to Hardcore Holly. One can actually do it, the other likes to pretend he can.

Magus in the TNA roster thread

Abyss: I've said it before: don't think Mankind/Kane. Think VADER. Or maybe even Andre.

Well who is he?

And I have to admit I did think of a weird Kane/Mankind amalgam when I saw him.

Some big guy from Puerto Rico that TNA decided to bring over, put under a mask, and push moderately hard. Certainly worked out better than the other Puerto Rican stars TNA brought in. (Apolo, anyone?)

Let me just say I don't dislike Abyss. I think he's good enough in the ring and his gimmick just needs a slight make over. But I just drives me crazy to see him being built up as some monster. I mean 6'10?

And comparing him to Vader is also sort of joke right now. Vader was a huge star in Japan and played the unstoppable monster perfectly. In his prime he would work circles around Abyss.

As for the make over. He's should change his custome to look like the Machine Character from the movie 8MM. That would be perfect for him and would solve the hey that dude looks like kane/mankind problem.

Actually, the main comparison to Mankind/Kane comes from the mask, and I wouldn't want too different of a mask for Abyss should they change it. Maybe make the mask stand out more with different patterns or something, or simplify it, I dunno.

As for title histories...I'll do that right here, off the top of my head. No dates, though, as it'd be hard-as-balls to try to remember all the dates. Also, both the World and Tag belts have longer lineages than just TNA (obviously), so I'm only counting the TNA-era (since they were both vacated before TNA's debut anyway).

  • Jerry Lynn defeated AJ Styles to become the second two-time NWA X-Division champion.

  • ...and I lose track after this because I stopped watching/caring until AJ won it back earlier this year (so for these you'll have to do research)...
  • "The Fallen Angel" Christopher Daniels defeated AJ Styles ©.
NWA World Tag Team titles
  • Jerry Lynn and AJ Styles won a one-night tournament to become the first NWA World Tag Team champions of the TNA era.
  • America's Most Wanted (Chris Harris and James Storm) won a Tag Team Gauntlet for the Gold for the vacant NWA World Tag Team titles after the NWA Board of Directors stripped AJ Styles and Jerry Lynn of the belts.

"The Fallen Angel" Christopher Daniels defeated AJ Styles ©.

The blanks here are:

AJ Styles defeated Frankie Kazarian on the first Wed PPV after Impact debuted on FSN.

The title was then held up after Kazarian and Shane both pulled the belt down during an Ultimate X match with AJ Styles.

Petey Williams won a 10 man (I think) Gauntlet for the Gold sometime in August 2004 to win the belt.

AJ Styles defeated Petey Williams and Chris Sabin at Final Resolution this January in an Ultimate X match.

Why did Jeff Jarrett get stripped of the belt? And is he like the HHH of this promotion? Why the hell has he been champ so much?

I was also wondering what shows to order. Like dates for the weekly PPVs that are good or whatever? I mean I'm going to start watching Impact every saturday because I find it to be a nice alternative but I still don't know much about the history.

At one time weren't WWE cast-offs showing up left and right? I thought D-Lo Brown got huge in TNA.

Yes, he is, but a far less talented version. And he's been champion so much due to a combination of his wanting to be the top guy above all others and Dixie Carter being a mark for so-called 'star power'. Right now, though, Jeff is the one with the most power.

The X Cup(?) PPV, with Juventud versus Teddy Hart, is one to get.

Didn't AJ beat Jarrett at Hard Justice with Tito as ref then Raven won it in the King of the Mountain match at Slammiversary..?

Maybe. I'm not sure on the titles, for the most part, from after the first King of the Mountain match (when I stopped watching for a period of time) and earlier this year.

And yes, TNA's done the "title changes hands on a DQ" a couple of times, actually. Mostly with the tag belts, though, so it kinda diminishes those.
