Personally I don't mind conference championship games but I think divisions are a huge waste of time, and lead to nonsense like what we are seeing in the ACC and Big 12 this season. They should simply have a 12 team pool and match up the top 2 teams at the end of the season.

I hate conference title games with a passion. The problem with them is that it's not about winning the conference. It's about a team in national championship contention having another chance to lose... or, it's about some fluke team who steals a spot in the BCS... it's just silliness.

 

Plus, it's not fair unless all teams are forced to play this extra game. Which will never happen. So, just scrap the stupid idea. Use this extra week for a playoff system.

I liked the bowl system the way it used to be set up, because everyone just went where they were supposed to and played. I also liked that it left the press running around trying to figure out a national champion.

Update: Notre Dame is up 14-7 on Stanford. Nevada is now beating Fresno State 24-10.

I'm not a huge fan on conference championship games but they are a necessary evil for large conferences as you can't guarentee the two best teams will play each other. I agree with the idea that the divisions are pointless. You could you a division format for setting up the schedule but in the end it's counter productive to have the division format if one division is particularly bad in a given year.

If the divisions are done properly, they should still have at least 1-2 good teams each year.

 

 

In the SEC, the SEC East has been *THE* power division of the conference since the inception of the East/West split thanks to Florida, Tennessee, and Georgia.

 

However, the West has still had some very good teams each year because Alabama and Auburn are constant winners, LSU has been resurgent, and Arkansas and Ole Miss have both had runs of good years.

 

The only exception to the rule is Mississippi State, which has had about 2 good years in the past 15 seasons and is a perennial cellar-dweller a la Vandy in the East.

The division that Florida State is in is pretty much a lock to send them to the ACC title game every year.

 

Atlantic Division contains:

 

Florida State

Clemson

Boston College

Wake Forest

NC State

Maryland

 

Coastal Division contains:

 

Va. Tech

Miami

Ga. Tech

UNC

Virginia

Duke

Until Notre Dame decides that it's in their best interests to join the Big Ten instead of being independent in football and in the Big East in all other sports, it ain't happening.

 

 

Of course, NBC declining to renew Notre Dame's football contract could do it... It's hard to justify paying so much to see Notre Dame vs. Navy, vs. Air Force, vs. Rutgers, etc. in order to get one or two good games like Notre Dame vs. Michigan or Notre Dame vs. USC.

It's the latter of the two. This sort of debate has been going on since long before the BCS existed. Also, Notre Dame's absurd new deal with the BCS won't do anything to help matters.

Notre Dame gets a pass from the BCS because they're Notre fuckin' Dame. They were specifically written into the original BCS selection process while all the mid-majors were told "You MIGHT get an At Large but don't count on it."

 

 

Notre Dame's Fiesta bowl appearance under Whittingham should have canned that clause, when Oregon knocked the living piss out of them, but it didn't happen.

As opposed to Florida-Florida State, where at least 2 players got ejected while I was watching and probably a lot more than that did throughout the whole game.

Well it wasn't really a fight but I didn't know what to call it. It was more like trash-talking.

I was hoping it would lead to a real fight after the game but I guess OSU had their spirit broken.

OSU is so boring without Les Miles. Mike Gundy doesn't talk about taking on "any sucka" and stuff like that.

Fresno is still down 16-24 in the 3rd against a half-assed Nevada team.

 

Stanford has tied it up 14 all against Notre Dame right before the half.

 

Virginia Tech is only up 6-3 on UNC at the half.

 

 

These three games alone will cause all kinds of fun with the computer polls and the BCS, depending on the outcomes.

I am thrilled they've managed to keep it competitive as I was really concerned this would a primetime humiliation for the Cardinal. The zone defense does seem to have Quinn confused but they'll need a couple more big breaks if they expect to pull off the upset. I just hope Walt Harris learned his lesson from the UCLA and doesn't go to the "play not to lose" conservative play calling.

I said FSU should be embarassed by what their program's become. I'm a Noles fan, and they really haven't been an elite program since they lost to OU in the Orange Bowl.I'd love to get Richt from Georgia. Another name to consider is Rich Rodriguez of West Virginia.Nowing Bobby he'll prbably hand select, Jeff Bowden to take over.

As big of an LSU fan as I am, an At Large bid for them would require a LOT of help from elsewhere.

 

 

For one, it means no Notre Dame.

 

For another, it means that Ohio State, Oregon, and/or Miami would have to be unappealing At Large teams. That would depend on the bowl involved.

 

 

If Miami is an At Large, they probably won't go to the Orange Bowl because the Orange will probably take the ACC champ over the Big East champ.

 

If Ohio State gets an At Large, it means they'll probably be going to the Sugar or Orange, as the Fiesta seems to want Penn State badly.

 

If Oregon gets an At Large, it'll have to be to the Fiesta Bowl. They don't travel well enough to the east to get a bid to the Sugar or Orange.

 

 

If LSU gets an At Large, it'll probably be to the Orange. They can't get an At Large to the Sugar (would be an SEC Title Game rematch with Georgia) and they're unlikely to go to the Fiesta (already played Arizona State in Tempe earlier this year).
