New to Photoshop

Graphics board, figured it's close enough.

 

Using the Photoshop free trial, and the tutorials mistake me for a person who has some knowledge about what I'm dealing with. Sadly, I have none.

 

So, in dummy speak, can someone tell me how to make an image transparent, so I can put it over a second image and have them mesh (so to speak)?

Never mind. Mods, feel free to delete this.

 

Searched the damn help database endlessly, not once did it mention that handy little Opacity meter, which was just what I needed.
