The 48th Annual Grammy Nominees

Recommended Posts

Well...she pissed herself.

EDIT: okay you probably need more info

At a festival in San Diego, the Black Eyed Peas were an hour late for their set, when they showed up, they were very trashed, and it showed. At one point during the show, Fergie, very drunk with a very full bladder, pissed her pants on stage.

The fact that Eminem and 50 Cent both got nominated for such shitty albums makes me sad. I thought "Late Registration" was great, so I don't have any problems with it being on there and "Be" is undisputable, just a great album. I don't even have a problem with Missy Elliot being on there... I didn't really listen to it that much, but what I heard I liked. The Game's "The Documentary" was better than that bullshit Eminem and 50 put out this year. I realize hip-hop acts don't usually get much attention, and having Common on there was a breath of fresh air, but I wonder if the people in charge of this catagory even heard Little Brother, Sage Francis, Atmosphere or Blackalicious who all put out albums this year (not their best albums, but still very good.) The Ying Yang Twins' "United States of Atlanta" would be a good choice too, or perhaps some recognition of the Houston rap scene...

Not that I've ever thought a Grammy was vindication for an album, but it still worries me that it might make Eminem feel better about releasing "Encore." It was one of the most disapointing things I've ever heard in my life.

Slipknot is going to win this...so it won't be the first time a non-metal band wins the Best Metal Grammy.

Jethro Tull's metal grammy demonstrates the Academy's grasp of the genre

Late Registration is great. I mean, you haven't even heard it, have you? Your lack of interest in hip-hop probably makes it not worthwhile for you, though. Still, that U2 album is ass. Maybe talk about Mariah or something.

I tried to listen to it, and I really didn't see the appeal. I don't know what constitutes a classic rap album, though. I can't tell good production from bad production. I can tell that Kanye West isn't the best rapper, and he seems to say UNH! a lot. As I mentioned, even the reviews that are glowing make note of the fact that he's in over his head. It feels like he was deemed The Next Big Thing In Rap because somebody had to be. Just explain to me why this deserves its praise.

For the great production and the great production alone. Kanye pretty much sucks as a rapper and I think that everyone knows it. For every good line he delievers, you have to listen to 100 crappy ones. But the guy can get behind the boards and deliever some great music and thats what he did here. If ou don't "get" good production in rap music, then you won't see that appeal because that is its only appeal. Songs like Roses, Gone, On my way Home, hell, even Goldigger are all songs that people can't wait till Kanye stops rapping so they can hear the music in the background or the other people with actual talent on the song.

I don't think loops of music are enough to put an album at the top of a critics' poll, though. I mean, I can find good music to sample, and loop it in ProTools or Cool Edit, I just can't snag hot guest stars like Academy Award-winning Jamie Foxx or Maroon 5's Adam Levine.

Well, that isn't really how it works. His productions are a lot more complex than you're implying, but you did say that you don't really get the distinction between different quality levels of rap production, so okay. I think there's also something to be said for the creative impulse behind the formulation of a production, which often gets lost in what you might see as simplistic.

Also, Adam Levine is a guest appearance slut these days, so you could probably get him if you pretended to be black.

Okay, so "production," always kind of a nebulous and intangible thing, is enough to put him over the top as someone with great albums? Is this equivalent to giving a free pass to a rock band that has an annoying singer with trite lyrics, but the guitar riffs are kinda catchy and it's mixed well? Wait, I just described Weezer, so it is.

Whatever. I'll never be able to put rap on the same level as rock, jazz, or classical. I mean, it's more than acceptable to discuss jazz, blues, soul, and all that because jazz has kind of stepped into the "musician's music" spot, but 20something white guys discussing the "great production" and "infectious hooks" on a rap album will probably sound like toolboxes to me for a long time.
