Time Magazine is retarded.

I must say, I've warmed up somewhat to Bono vis-a-vis his charitable efforts, which I'd previously written off as standard-issue, run-of-the-mill celebrity self-importance. He's developed friendships with powerful political conservatives (including Jesse Helms, who he apparantly moved to tears in a 2002 speech about African poverty and with whom he recently dined) instead of taking the standard tack of calling them heartless assholes while cozying up to powerful political liberals who, at the end of the day, don't give any more of a shit about poor people. I think this is a pretty shrewd move on his part, and in any case, even if I don't necessarily agree with some of his efforts, at least he is out actively working within the system (where actual stuff gets done) instead of holding the occasional concert and/or wearing a shirt or a ribbon that declares how much he cares.

Plus, he also exhibits the rare trait among celebrity activists in apparantly actually knowing what in the hell he's talking about; I understand his impressive, detailed knowledge of the background of the causes he supports is one of the things that has won him respect and put him in good stead with the politicos he's lobbying.

Who are Melinda and Bono Gates? Isn't Bill the only important one?

Damn.

And there have already been explanations of why Bono and the Gateses were 'people of the year'. If the only thing that people can post contrary to this is 'fuck u2!', give no explanations or other viable candidates (except 'nature' which was agreeable to me) than just strap on your helmets and walk into walls.
