Guest starvenger Report post Posted May 30, 2002 >Do you guys think this is going to be the end of Cujo in T.O.? A distinct possibility. Like I was saying, the Rangers and Stars have the money to spend on him. The Leafs probably won't budge on their offer (est. to be a mere 7 mil) until mid-June... Guest redbaron51 Report post Posted May 30, 2002 If they can't sign Joseph they can sign Eddie Belfour
Guest gthureson Report post Posted May 30, 2002 I wouldn't bother signing Joseph. He's a 35 year old reflex goaltender, there is no upside anymore, just a downside. Let him walk for the price he is asking. And don't bother with Belfour. He's farther down his homestretch to retirement than Joseph is. Either try to swing a deal at the draft, or go with Schwab and Barrasso.
Guest treble charged Report post Posted May 30, 2002 I'd sign Dafoe, and keep either Schwab or Barrasso and platoon them for awhile. Then, go with the hot hand for as long as they'll take you. I still can't see them letting Joseph go without a fight though. If they let him go, they'll be a huge backlash.
Guest gthureson Report post Posted May 30, 2002 I'm sure Leafs fans want to keep him. Its nice they have loyalty to their guy. But, if I am a GM, there is no way I can sleep at night giving Cujo $9.5/4 years. Which is what he will be asking. If Bob Clarke gets into his head that he wants Cujo, the price might go over $10 million. If he wanted a one year deal, I might go for it. But he and his agent have been pretty adamant that they want four. I don't think Sundin is worth that money, but thats done. Can't change it. It set the bar for what the Leafs MVP is worth though, and CuJo can make a good argument he is worth more to the team than Mats is. For that 9-10 million, you could sign Dafoe and probably a defenceman to shore up the bottom half of the top 6. Maybe add in a forward to play on the third or fourth line. (Let Domi go unless he is willing to take a pay cut. Valk can stay if he doesn't ask for too much. I think he is a useful guy to have on the fourth line.) I'd package up some dead weight for draft picks if I was the Leafs. They need some actual prospects in the system. Healey and Farkas are career minor-leaguers. Pilar might be good. But the only blue-chip they have right now is Boyes.
Guest Report post Posted May 30, 2002 I also think Cujo is headed to philly, and I wouldnt blame the Leafs for balking at 9 mil for a goalie, who could be on the decline very soon (who knows?). I agree that the Leafs should go after Dafoe, and shore up another defencemen, and if they have any eye for talent, make sure Dempsey stays and irons out his issues with Quinn, Dempsey is coming along nicely. Belfour hopefully wont be asking for much, I mean where can he go, for a high price tag even the Rangers would be cautious with him, so he is another good choice. I still think someone should try and swing Dipietro or Ozzie from NYI, they cant have both of them, right?
Guest gthureson Report post Posted May 30, 2002 I think the Isles plan right now is to keep Dipietro in the minors one more year, and go with Osgood/Snow. If Dipietro can't be kept in the minors 'cause he has nothing more to learn there, they'd more Snow and go with Osgood starting and Dipietro getting 25-30 starts. They don't want to rush the guy. The Rangers, I think, are going to go with Blackburn. Maybe get a guy that can take 40 starts, and split the duties. Belfour wouldn't go for that. He didn' want to split with Marty Turco, why would he split with Blackburn? I don't know if Nathan Dempsey ran over Quinn's dog or what, but he doesn't like the guy. If the press hadn't climbed up his ass, I doubt he would have put him in for game 6. And I think Dempsey knows this, and will go somewhere where he knows he will play. He ain't that young. He's almost 28, I think. I think he will go somewhere where he'll have a guaranteed roster spot.

Considering that neither expansion team wanted him and that every team in the NHL has passed over him on waivers several times, I'd say that's an awfully optimistic outlook. He'll get a job as the number 7 or 8 defenceman. He's obviously not top 5 material, but he's good enough to be that fill in guy when a defenceman goes down. Guest gthureson Report post Posted May 30, 2002 Sather operates a bit differently with his money. He'll spend when its somebody he really wants. Does he really want Belfour? Why would he? He can spend the same money and keep Richter, who is a better goalie than Belfour. Everybody likes attaching the NYR to every free agent out there, but if Sather goes after anyone, I think it'll be Dafoe. He's younger. This isn't a Rangers team on the verge of winning the Cup. It's a few years away. I'd be suprised if he plonked down the money on Joseph, because it won't really help the team. Dempsey impressed in the playoffs. Thats all you need to do sometimes. He can probably fit in as a 5 or 6 guy on one of the teams in the bottom quarter of the league. I mean, Luke Richardson probably could have passed through waivers in Edmonton until he looked pretty damn solid when they upset Colorado. Then the Flyers threw money at him. And a Leafs fan is the last one that should be talking about anybody mishandling their prospects.
