I get this error when attempting to play any file type.

"Cannot play back the audio stream: no audio hardware is available, or the hardware is not responding."

It looks like I'm missing drivers, but no clue as to the brand of sound card. Anyone point me in the right direction?

Sounds like your soundcard is having some conflicts in windows maybe or isn't showing up at all. Do you still hear "windows" noises? Like booting up or shutting down?

Nope. I just get beeps from the computer itself when I get a new e-mail or a windows box pops up.

Once I figured out who made my motherboard I was able to d/l the audio drivers and reinstall them. That did the trick to getting my sound back. WMP still doesn't work so I went back to version 6 and no more problems.

That’s strange. I use the Windows media player classic in Windows XP as well, I hate the new crap with all the junk you don't need. The classic mpplayer2.exe found in the same folder is the best thing in the world... Besides WinAmp & VLC
