TNA Philly show confirmed

Recommended Posts

Ticket update, from Johnson:

TNA had more good news in that their 6/9 Hardcore War event in Philadelphia, PA did huge ticket sales in the first weekend, selling out both the $125 Ultimate Experience ringside seating and the $35 General Admission seats. The show looks as if it will sell out before long.

From a UWF press release sent out today:

There are a limited number of seats available for TNA's debut show in Philadelphia on June 9. Due to the strong response to this show, officials are looking at locations in New Jersey for a potential second show on June 10. More information will be made available later this week.

I remember it being rumored awhile ago that they were looking at Atlantic City. Should definitely be an interesting weekend for TNA...

Results are in:

Total Non-stop Action made their debut in the Northeast market tonight with a show out of the former ECW Arena, New Alhambra Hall, in South Philadelphia. Some former ECW stars, as well as currenty Northeast indy favorites, were on the show, and as always, the ECW crowd was vocal for what they liked and didn't like.

1) Shark Boy pinned Simon Diamond after a Deep Sea Drop. Diamond was popular with the crowd due to being an ECW regular in the promotion's last days, but managed to turn a part of the crowd against him with mic work. Not a great match, Shark Boy is a limited comedy worker (and has anybody else noticed that, when he bites people's asses, his mask doesn't have a mouth hole? Isn't this, like, really business-exposing) and Diamond looked at something less than his best, probably due to some ring rust and injuries.

2) Jay Lethal pinned Sonjay Dutt following his released Dragon Suplex. Pretty good match, the crowd was very familiar with both guys from their times working in the Northeast the past few years, and were solidly behind both, which made the match seem that much better.

3) Abyss beat Brother Runt with a Black Hole Slam on thumbtacks. Brother Runt was way over with the crowd from his time in ECW, and took ridiculous bumps, including a press slam onto the tacks. He was also press-slammed into the crowd, a la from ECW with Bam Bam Bigelow, and bled a ton. Abyss, for his part, took a double stomp on a table (it didn't break).

4) In a special women's match, Tracy Brooks beat Gail Kim with Christy Hemme as special ref. Not good, but...I don't think it was supposed to be.

5) Rhino beat Jeff Jarrett. As expected, Jarrett had a ton of heat with the crowd, but once he did his mic work, it really wasn't very good and the crowd seemed to go from hatred to ambivilence. The crowd chanted "You Screwed Bret," and "You Got Fired," at referee Earl Hebner, to which Rhino grabbed the mic and said "I got fired, too. But the same guy who fired me now desperately wants to bring me back." Good match, the crowd was into Rhino the whole way, and Jarrett lost clean to the Gore. After the match, Rhino again grabbed the mic, once again mentioned the ECW offer, and said that he planned to stick with TNA.

Intermission

6) Petey Williams beat Jerry Lynn with a Canadian Destroyer in a good match. Jerry Lynn was way over with the Philadelphia crowd, as he always was, and the fans seemed genuinely happy to see him, even chanting "You've still got it!" at him during the match.

7) In an X-Division title match, Samoa Joe successfully retained the title, beating AJ Styles and Christopher Daniels after making Styles tap to the choke. All three men were very over with the crowd, and had a good match, though a step below their classic from last year. The finish was kind of sudden.

After the match, America's Most Wanted came to the ring and beat down on both Styles and Daniels. They then reiterated their challenge to a Philadelphia street fight to any tag team, severely hinting it would be Team 3-D. The lights went out and into the ring came...the James Gang. BG James then did a promo running down Team 3-D and the fans, until Team 3-D came on the TNAtron (?). They insulted both teams with drug references and Brokeback Mountain references, teasing not being there, until they came in from the side entrance. They then continued their micwork running down the teams, albeit in a more profane way than before, before they started what was either a three way dance or a four-on-two handicap match.

The match went all over the building, with one member of AMW and one member of the James Gang double-teaming one member of 3-D, and the same going on the other side. It was hard to see, but the action did spill out of the building at one point. Brother Ray then hit the ring, and called for fans to throw chairs at the ring. Once they began doing so, Kip James ran right out of there, as did AMW, and eventually BG James, leaving Team 3-D as the only ones in the ring. After the fans were told to stop, one more chair hit Brother Ray (and he did not look too happy about that), and BG James came out and told the fans that they had a great finish planned, but that they werent' going to get it, and "Fuck you."

Team 3-D then did some mastubatory mic work putting over the fans and Styles and Daniels, and then Brother Runt came out to rip up his One Night Stand contract, and that was that. Kind of a lackluster way for the show to end, to be kind.

Overall, the show was pretty good, but the finish to the show was horrible. Nobody could see what was going on in the brawl, there was no finish, and the mic work never seemed to stop. It left a sour taste in what had been a good night before that.

Thoughts? Did anyone go?

Dave Scherer posted this about the show:

Speaking of ECW, I went to last night's TNA house show at the old ECW Arena and I have to tell you that it was a hats off, awesome event from beginning to end The guys worked so hard all night and there was a ton of great wrestling on the show, including a simply amazing three way between Samoa Joe, Christopher Daniels and AJ Styles. At the end, the entire main event was just off the hook, from Brother Ray's awesome promo to start the match to the amazing finish when he called for the fans to throw their chairs in the ring, and they did. I never thought I would see that spot again and it was just as wild as the last time I saw it in the Arena It was a real ECW-style feel back in the Arena where I got my start in this business and I had a ball. If TNA comes to you area with a show, I highly recommend you go and see it. You won't be disappointed.

A sour end to the show, but everything else really sounds great. I wonder if TNA plans to release this on DVD?

The UWF has DVD-R's of all their TNA shows for sale on their website. I'm sure this won't be any different.

I don't understand why Bubba Ray had to go and call for the chairs to be thrown before the finish of the match, unless BG James was just messing with the fans and that really was supposed to be the ending.

I'm pretty sure that they planned on the chairs....i'd guess they wanted to re-create the classic ECW moment.

I wonder if they'll ever do a PPV from Philly. I haven't seen pictures, but I heard the arena has been remodeled and I believe WWE is gonna do a live ECW show from there. A TNA PPV from the ECW arena would be awesome.

interesting tidbit, from PWI:

As noted yesterday on a hotline in the PWInsider.com Elite section, the original plan last night for The Big Show was to have him face Spike Dudley, but Matt Hyson turned down the offer and ripped up his WWE contract in the middle of the ring at TNA Hardcore War Friday in Philadelphia.

isn't it kinda ironic that Spike worked the match he was supposed to have with Show with Abyss? lol...

O/T but I was just going through the links with those vids and came across this:
- pretty funny. :P

Yeah, I believe that video was posted in the "Comments which don't warrant a thread" thread. It's great, especially Christopher Daniels because his sudden outburst of charisma is so unexpected.
