According to CNNSI's website, former relief pitcher Steve Howe, 48, was killed in a one-car accident after his pickup truck rolled over.

While he was a talented player, winning the 1980 Rookie Of The Year award and helping the LA Dodgers win the 1981 World Series, he's mainly the punchline of the MLB's suspensions for substance abuse, which saw him receive seven separate "lifetime suspensions" during his career.

His career ended for good in June 1996, after being released by the Yankees and then being caught at an airport with a loaded gun in his luggage.

That is very sad to hear. I remember all the chances that the Yankees had given him in the early to mid 1990's. RIP Steve Howe.

So anyone think he was high or drunk when he crashed?

No toxicology has been released yet, but I'd say it's probably a 75% chance of a "yes" on that question.

Howe had gotten in a motorcycle accident in Montana in the last few years in which he ended up with a DUI, so he still had his demons.

EDIT- That DUI was about 8 years ago, so he MAY have shaped up since then. I doubt it, though.

I am now reminded of the line from Naked Gun 33 1/3 where Leslie Nielsen said "I will give him one last chance...and I don't mean one of these Major League Baseball 'Steve Howe' kind of last chances!"
