Annabelle 0 Report post Posted May 27, 2006 nice usage of the word "perilously", czech... czech, who is apparently a jazz afficianado, stating there are only so many chords an artist can use is quite hilarious. what happened to the adverturism in music? or are they only supposed to stay within the appropriate guidelines of making a mianstream rock single? there's so much people can do. by your logic, rock music is a stagnant art without any true artistic merits whatsoever. its almost an apologetic defense of the red hot chili peppers laziness. which is funny. Guest Felonies! Report post Posted May 27, 2006 Well, is there not a finite number of chords, as well as progressions that can "safely" be used? I never said rock is a meritless stagnant art, that's far from true. But in terms of getting a song on the radio, which was clearly their aim, you probably do have to work within certain parameters. How many bands can get a single on the air that's written in anything other than 3/4, 4/4, or 12/8, with any sort of extended chords? It's a simple song for simple tastes, ripped off from a similarly simple song. I like Tom Petty as much as the next guy, but most of his stuff isn't really that ambitious. Tom Petty has pretty much been off the radar for a while, so they figured most people wouldn't catch it, or care that much. There is a lot people COULD do, but they just wouldn't get it past most program directors, or Clear Channel CPUs, or whoever the hell decides what gets on the air.
