Legends wrestling Indy Shows

Recommended Posts

So I was at this Indy show last night, and one of the guys on the card was Hacksaw Jim Duggan. Now Hacksaw, the poor guy, looked terrible. I know the man beat cancer, and as far as other people in his age bracket go, he doesn't look too bad, but he still looks like a 55 year old guy out there in the ring. The question I have though, is when these legends like Duggan or Snuka wrestle on these Indy Shows out in the middle of no where, are they doing it because they just enjoy wrestling, they like meetign the fans, and just come out to have fun, or are they doing it because they legitimately need the couple hundred bucks they get from the payoff to make a living? Are some of these guys going to be wrestling into their 60's and 70's just to keep making enough money to pay the bills?

It's gotta be money. A lot of these guys probably wasted the big bucks they made in the '80s on drugs, booze, women, bad investments, etc.

I heard a story from a friend who went to an indy TV taping that took place a couple of years. The show was completely amateurish and started 90 minutes late and lasted something like 4 and 1/2 hours and the featured attraction was ol' Hacksaw. Only 75 or so people showed up, but during the course of the taping, Hacksaw was willing to talk to any fan who wanted to. Now if that's not love of the sport I don't know what is. Now I'm not saying this is the case for the majority of the guys, but I'd like to believe that deep down, it's for the love of the sport. However, seeing things like the Heroes of Wrestling pay per view kind of go against that.
