Eh, I can see it lyrically, but I said vocally, like Hansi's range. He can hit alot of stuff that most of the vocalists in these Shrilly Power-Metal bands could never hope of doing. From a soft whisper, to the afformented shril scream to growls. He has great range as a singer. And as a band themselves, their quite a few steps above even Iced Earth in how they arrange and play their music. Not so much live, but on CD's their probably the best.

We've talked about BG's lyrics before, it doesn't really bother me, but I can see why it would. Just about every other Power Metal band goes off on fantasy. Atleast BG comes up with storylines and ideas for theirs instead of just random "dragon. Kill. Maiden." type shit.

I just like the sample of "Fury of the Storm" as seen on YTMND.

This I'll agree with 100%. They only have like, one song that I prefer live (Valhalla).

And yeah, apparantly I forgot how to read. My bad.

Though I'm sad that Ripper is now doing Iced Earth's vocals. I know Barlow seems like one of those guys that you either love or you hate, but he at least had a lot more range then Ripper. I really can't imagine Ripper singing some IE stuff live.

Blind Guardian can't even really pull off their most difficult and best album (Opera), or if they do, they have to dumb it down significantly. That either shows how technical and advanced the work is on the CD, or the fact that they just can't recapture what they can do in the studio live. I think it's a combination of both. That CD is pretty amazing when you just listen to all the little stuff, like the constant guitar solo-like things instead of just a constant rhythm during singing, little shit that has it be hard to do.

The BG I've heard live is not good. But that doesn't really bother me, I don't go see Live music anyway.

As for Ripper v.s. Barlow, I think Barlow may be the best metal vocalist I've ever heard. He just had amazing range beyond damn near any comprehension. It sucks that he quit singing. Ripper does nothing for me. He falls into "I WILLLLLLLLL SIIIIIIIIIING LIIIIIIIIIIIIIIKE THIIIIIIIS FUUUUUUUUCKING LOOOOOOOUD AND HIIIIIIIIIIGH AS MYYYYYYYYYYY ONLLLLLLLLY REAAAAAAAAAAAAAL NOOOOOOOOOOOTE". Plus, his screams are cringe worthy. I don't get why Schaffer didn't do the vocals instead of getting Ripper. HE'S better at it then Ripper IMO.

One band I got turned onto, is Savage Circus. Apparently, Blind Guardian's old drummer founded them. So far, I like what I hear. It's kinda like old BG thrash style metal with their more Epic-y qualities mixed in.

I dislike Barlow's voice, for the most part. He seems like Zakk Wylde, in that it's mumbled but still audible. But Zakk's vocals fit the music he writes, whereas Barlow's...doesn't, really. Ripper, IMO, has a better voice altogether. Just listen to Priest's "Blood Stained," and you'll see what I mean. That just may be my favorite Priest song, actually.

But yeah. Dragonforce are gay.

I like Barlow's powerful voice and thought it did work well for IE. It is a credit to Schaeffer though that he could turn around and make the music work for Tim (I've always thought the "Ripper" nickname was silly and altogether dumb) Owens though.

Owens can be good when he mixes it up between a regular voice and his Halford voice, but when he sticks with the Halford voice for too long (ex: "The Reckoning") it is rather annoying.

Anyways, since the thread has turned away from the original subject, here's just a few of the PM bands I'd recommend ahead of Dragonforce.

IE and BG have already been noted

Nevermore

Iron Savior

Hammerfall

Sonata Arctica

Kamelot

Stratovarius

Edguy

I'd say Nevermore are more speed metal than power metal, really. Sludgy, fast and heavy, and Warrell's voice isn't as "pure" as most power metal singers tend to be. Very, VERY borderline, though, and I still love Nevermore.

Sorry, I was focused more on bands that were founded/came to prominence in the last decade (and therefore more comparable to DF)

Helloweens first three albums are definite classics of the genre.

Eh, I'm more of a Doom Metal and Stoner Metal fan (give me Electric Wizard or Boris anyday). There are bands not in that subgenre I've taken a liking to: Nevermore, Neurosis, Isis, Godflesh (actually, just about anything Justin Broadrick is involved with is awesome), Amorphis, and Pelican. Any other recommendations?

I still hate Death Metal and Black Metal, though for some reason, I've recently taken a likeing to Ulver.

Doom Metal

Do you listen to any of the three big English doom bands (Paradise Lost, My Dying Bride, Anathema)?

I've heard of them. Also, I'm a fan of Candlemass.

Oh, and this cracks me up for some reason.
