JJMc 0 Report post Posted July 23, 2006 I've just put together my first computer. It was my first time, but I am not by any means computer illiterate and I pretty much had an easy time connecting all of the components etc. Setting up the BIOS is completely foreign to me, but I figured I'd cross that bridge when I got there. BUT, when trying to spark it up for the first time, I get nothing. I check the connections for the power/reset buttons and eventually realize that I had everything wrong. I re-do them, plug it in, and the hard disk light comes on, but I still get nothing when I hit power. I'm positive that I hooked everything up correctly. The only thing I can think of is that the power switch on the case is no good, since I'm using the case from an old computer, but that would be a huge coincidence since I had it running fine a couple of months ago with all of the old components. Here is a screen of the motherboard panel where all of the switches are supposed to plug in. The POWER_SW is the one I'm not having luck with. HD_LED works fine. Does anyone know what "FP PWR/SLP" is? I tried the wire for the power switch in that slot without luck. The manual doesn't tell you shit and is vague. Does anyone know why the hell this isn't working? -Jim
Prophet of Mike Zagurski 0 Report post Posted July 23, 2006 When you tried to put together your computer... or I should say, when you started it, was there a cracking or popping sound? Did you ground yourself and prevent static electricity from entering the computer? What the specs of the computer?
JJMc 0 Report post Posted July 23, 2006 No, there was no cracking or popping of any kind. No sounds, except that of the power switch clicking. I always discharged any static before touching the computer. I wasn't wearing a wristband or anything, but I was extremely careful. I ordered a CPU/motherboard combo from newegg.com. The page is below. It's definitely on the lower end, but there's no reason the son of a bitch shouldn't power up. a31g Also, even if there was a static problem, how would that explain the LED light getting power? I don't know, but to me, if I fried the thing, nothing would work, right? Thanks for the reply. -Jim

Prophet of Mike Zagurski 0 Report post Posted July 25, 2006 (On purpose double post just in case you can't see it) Are you using your old power supply? Check the PS connections and also smell the PS. If it's burnt then your PS is dead. Does the manufacturer have support website? I bought MSI board and they have forum that answers my questions.
JJMc 0 Report post Posted July 25, 2006 Yeah, it's the old power supply, but there's definitely power getting to the board. I'll check out their website. Thanks again.
Prophet of Mike Zagurski 0 Report post Posted July 25, 2006 If you got all new components and old power supply, that isn't good depending on the config of your old and new system. My computer is two years old and I am using a 480W PS.

My computer is two years old and I am using a 480W PS. That's true, I never thought about that. I'm going to try a new power supply. Thanks again.
Guest Vitamin X Report post Posted August 1, 2006 yeah, you shouldn't be using your old power supply with new components.
