Guest Agent of Oblivion Report post Posted July 27, 2006 I got fired/quit from Big Lots once regarding breaks. I got hired on for christmas extra help, but didn't really NEED the job. I just wanted a little extra holiday money. I got scolded in front of everybody about some break time nonsense where I went a little early (and was honestly planning to go back early), I explained my plan to the bitch who had the temerity to ask if I thought "I was special," so I just told this really fat really religious woman who was the boss "Yes. get fucked" and left. The half dozen other stoners hired on for the same job laughed and laughed.
MarvinisaLunatic 0 Report post Posted July 27, 2006 I can take breaks whenever I want to as long as I get everything done, but I have to take a 1/2 unpaid break. There isn't a whole lot to do, I usually read the paper every day and sometimes I try to do the crossword puzzle. We also get trade magazines that I read. Im allowed to eat/drink whatever I want within reason, like say I cant cook something that isn't on the menu that day, but if I want something that is, I just cook extra for myself and I can have it. Used to be I could have all the pepsi products I wanted as well, but I've even weened myself off diet pepsi and diet ginger ale and now drinking water. I've lost 10 pounds just in the last two months doing that even though I was only drinking diet sodas before. I suppose I Get lucky only having to take 1/2 hour unpaid break since the rule is 1/2 hour per 6 hours worked and I work 13 hour (well I get paid for 12 1/2) shifts (5 am to 6pm). Im not going to complain.
Guest Agent of Oblivion Report post Posted July 27, 2006 Water's really good for your skin, too, Marvin. How did your latex allergy pan out?
EricMM 0 Report post Posted July 27, 2006 Good God he's intentionally losing water weight. Marvin water does not equal fat in any conceiveable way. No one likes a desert.
Epic Reine 0 Report post Posted July 27, 2006 I have 30 minutes. There's a cafeteria downstairs in the building I work in so I usually just grab something there (usually a big soft pretzel with some crumb cake). Sometimes though, my co-workers will wanna order Chinese or Mexican so I'll have that once in a while. You can eat at your workstation and you don't really need to take lunch in order to eat at my place, you can eat and work at the same time then just bullshit with others when you take your actual lunch break. My job is very surprisingly lenient when it comes to stuff like this.

dubq 0 Report post Posted July 28, 2006 I have lots of flex-time here so I can take longer than an hour if I need to - responsibly, of course - obviously I'm not going to come in late to meetings or whatever. Usually, though, I just work through it (eat in my office) and take the actual break at 4pm and go to the gym for an hour or so.
Scroby 0 Report post Posted July 29, 2006 In my one week of working produce... our insane manager wouldn't let us take lunches or breaks. Because dairy/frozen is not your job. It's your life. If your working 5 hours or more, your manager HAS to give you a lunch or break. Its against the law if your manager is not giving you, your breaks or lunch. Guest Princess Leena Report post Posted July 29, 2006 Indeed. But, just about everyone complained about the guy, and grocery stores don't give a shit. Much like all revolving door crap jobs.

Guest heyimbro Report post Posted July 29, 2006 There's a grocery store right across the street and a park on the other side of that, problem solved. There's also a picnic table in the backyard of my work. I usually don't take my hour for lunch when I do this though. It has healthier stuff and I've cut back on everything that's crap, so I do this often. There's also an abudance of restaurants within a 5 minute walk (one is also across the street), so when I decide to actually go with someone from work, I go there. Edwin MacPhisto 0 Report post Posted July 30, 2006 I work in downtown DC and have a pretty varied lunch, since I'm surrounded by places. I'm on salary and have minimal supervision, so I can take pretty much whatever I want (the company expects you to take between 45 and an hour, and less if something really important is in the pipeline). Favorite option is a great sandwich from Potbelly's ($3.99, just down the street). Cosi is decent, but a sandwich or salad and drink there is pushing $9 so it's a rare choice. There are a whole bunch of delis within 2-3 blocks that have tons of sandwiches and salad bars/Chinese buffets/etc. as well. I usually go out for lunch with coworkers about half the time and bring my own sandwiches otherwise. Gotta love the toaster oven in the kitchen.
