ROH Pure Wrestling Title and the Pure Title

Recommended Posts

I'm relatively new to ROH and I've been catching a few shows now and again on the fight network and I know they had a pure wrestling title, and then this morning I was watching and on Reborn-Completion they started another Pure tournament. What was the difference in Rules and stuff from the original Pure Wrestling Championship and the Pure title that was being decided on this show?

I know that this title was recently unified but I'd still like to know the difference in the belts and the rules and shit if there was any. Thanks in advance.

There is a strict 20 count.

Each wrestler can only use the ropes to free himself from a pin attempt or submission attempt 3 times and then they won't be able to break a pin/submission with them.

Kind of exposes the business, especially recently in matches with Strong/McGuiness and such where they'd all of a sudden use 6 rope breaks in a match just because it adds to the drama.

The Pure Title got some steam recently with some wicked defenses but was always lame, inferior, and business-exposing.

The ROH Pure Wrestling Title and ROH Pure Title are basically the same the title. AJ Styles won the Pure Wrestling Title in 2004 after defeating CM Punk in the finals of an 8 man, one night tournament to crown the first champion. It was renamed the ROH Pure Title after Styles was stripped of the Pure Wrestling Title due to being unable to wrestle for ROH as he became a TNA exclusive wrestler. Although, ROH considers the Pure Wrestling Championship and the Pure Championship to be two distinct titles, they're really the same title.

It can also change hands on a DQ/Count out.

I didn't care for the gimmicky rules for the pure title, but since ROH pretty much builds on their main title reigns for a lengthy time I don't think it'd be a bad idea to have a second belt

I like the basic idea of the Pure Title, but some of the details are kinda wonky. The worst is the whole "3 rope breaks" deal. It'd be much simpler to just not have any rope breaks, period. Either find a way to counter the hold, or you lose. Or use the old PRIDE rules: if the guys get to the ropes, the ref drags them back into the middle of the ring.
