I live in a pretty damn nice, if small, 1 bedroom apartment in Ft. Wayne which is $433 per month counting EVERYTHING but electric. Even cable. The two bedrooms on the same property are something like 550-6. That 1000+ bullshit for RENT is just insane. Fuck urban areas. New York isn't that cool.

Is it a studio?

Indiana's cheap, dude. It's not a studio. Small galley kitchen, modest living room, adjoining nook-like thing, and a decent bedroom and bathroom. Perfect size and price for a couple with no kids or aspirations of having any.

I pay $1300 for me and my girlfriend. One bedroom, living room, bathroom and kitchen. I pay an extra $20 for cable ($10 for the box, $5 for DVR and $5 for HBO On Demand) but everything else is included. It better be for that much.

I'm in a decent spot now. Ft. Wayne isn't exactly small. The second largest city in the state, I'm pretty sure. I'm also 90 minutes from Indianapolis, Detroit, and only a little further to Chicago if need be. Rent's cheap, there's plenty of jobs, crime isn't TOO outrageous outside of the hood, the taxes aren't bad, and the people are less redneck than the south.

I lived in the same town as my employer for a few months and spent nearly the same amount in gas driving to other places worth a shit to do the consumer thing. The truck runs like a champ. In the 3 years I've had it, I haven't put any money into it other than basic maintenance and a new set of tires.

 

Compared to $1000 rent and dealing with public transportation or dense urban traffic, I'll take $233 for my share of rent, $160 in gas, low-moderate traffic, and a little over an hour of total commute time (99% of which is interstate highway and country roads) per day ten times out of ten.

You will never convince me in a million years that rent that high is a good idea. Lets look at my monthly spending..

 

We've established around 500 bucks for rent/commute. My truck payment is around 250 just for the sake of round numbers, I smoke a carton a week or so, which is $30 and change, eat food, and buy stuff. Lets say 60 a week for that. Adds up to a little over 1100 bucks a month. That's damn near EVERYTHING I spend money on, and is a tenth more than a reasonable rent price for the areas you're talking about.

It isn't the lack of civilization, I just found most of the Midwest to be incredibly depressing whenever I've been there.

 

I'm going to call about that Brooklyn job today. I mean, shit, why not? I think it'll be good for life experience.

I've been thinking about getting a bike to ride around on back roads and through parks and shit because I like that sort of thing, but I've also been realizing that there really aren't a ton of opportunities for that around here without going through heavy traffic first. Maybe I do yearn for the wide open, low-cost frontier.
