Skies of Arcadia

I just started playing this game again on the Dreamcast and forgot how great it was.

 

I was just wondering why it never took off as much as FF7, when its actaully a better game.

Eric is right, though. And I'm a big fan of the DC. It's truly a shame the DC didn't get the popularity it deserved, because the innovation of it still amazes me.

 

I still play SoA every year. I wouldn't say it's the best RPG out there... the story is rather cliche, the loading during battles is pain... but, the scenery, and the fun, relaxing nature of the game always makes me want to play it again.

I think thats the first thing weve ever agreed on.

 

And i know what you mean about the DC, it should have take off in a huge way but never did. The same can be said about the Gamecube, that is the dreamcast of the new generation.

Skies is my favorite console RPG ever. I can't seem to find the power cord for my Dreamcast or I'd probably be playing it right now.

I'm mostly disappointing there wasn't a sequel, or even a similar RPG to SoA. Especially on XBox, where it could have been huge.

Oh, now you've gone and done it.

 

The PS2 completely buried it, but I think the Dreamcast still stands as Sega's best system. The launch lineup is still probably the best in console history (Soul Calibur, NFL2K, Sonic Adventure, Power Stone), and it introduced a ton of innovation that still stands in the marketplace. From a hardcore standpoint, it's also notable for being one of the first systems that you could hax0r, with emulator discs, copied games, etc. If the Saturn hadn't been such a complete clusterfuck, we'd probably be talking about the new Sega console for this gen.

 

And Skies of Arcadia is a great game. Not a watershed moment in gaming or anything, but a solid RPG on a system that really didn't offer much for the genre.

Aperantly there was going to be on, only in japan on the DC and on PS2 everywhere else, but it looks like it got shit canned

I think it was the utter desertion from 3rd parties that ended up killing the Dreamcast. No one wanted to make games for it once the PS2 came out. The GD-ROM hardware also ensured that the system was going to be obsolete by about 2001. The lack of copy protection didn't help either.

A big part of that came from the failure of the Saturn, though. Electronic Arts was one notable third-party developer that steered clear of the whole console, based upon the money that they lost developing their titles for Saturn. The early cancellation of production on the Saturn rubbed a lot of other third-party studios the wrong way as well.

Which is a real shame cause there were so many titles on the DC that would have made it a great console.

 

A remake, Skies of Arcadia Legends was released for the GameCube in 2003.

 

Is that any good? I know its got some new stories and an extra character.

I remember that the Redhead girl had a move that killed every enemy on the battle map. I loved this game so much back in 2000 and again in 2003 for the Gamecube. The only problem with the Dreamcast version was the random battles. I swear there was a random battle every 2 seconds.
