Houston-area rapist preys on men

HOUSTON, Texas (AP) -- A rapist who preys on young men has struck five times in the Houston area since mid-September, and police said Monday there may be even more victims who are too ashamed to come forward.

 

The rapist typically stalks, robs and sexually assaults his victims at gunpoint, apparently choosing them at random and attacking them near or inside their homes, police said. The most recent attack was November 30.

 

"I wish we had a link between the victims, because we might have a better chance of catching him," said Lt. Richard Whitaker of the police department in Baytown, where two of the attacks took place. "We don't have any affirmative links at all."

 

He said some victims may be reluctant to come forward because of their ages and "a pride thing" that makes men more reluctant to acknowledge being the victim of a sex crime.

 

Investigators believe rape is the motive, even though some victims were robbed. DNA testing is under way in an effort to identify the attacker.

 

In some cases, the attacker approached his victim outside their home. Other times, he broke into the home.

 

"I think he just sees one that he prefers, and then he begins to follow them and gather information, finding out where they live and watching their house," Whitaker said.

 

Victims have described the attacker as a clean-shaven black man, 18 to 21 years old, 5-foot-6 to 6 feet tall, with a shaved head.

 

The victims have all been men in their late teens.

Yeah, my sister Jessica is a reporter for the Baytown Sun, the newspaper for Baytown, TX where a couple of the attacks took place. From what I had heard, the attacks aren't happening in Houston proper, but more or less south of Houston, closer to Baytown, which is just off of I-10, about an hour and a half southeast of Houston, going towards Louisiana. Still, this is one of the myriad of reasons that I never open my door for black men. Gotsta be safe, yo.

Just for the people that demand closure for this story, the Baytown (incorrectly referred to as Houston) serial killer/rapist was caught today. And...here's a picture of him!

Man arrested in connection with May attack

Baytown police have arrested a man they believe is responsible for an armed robbery and sexual assault of a young man in May, and they have reason to believe the man is responsible for four similar attacks on young men in the area.

 

At a press conference Wednesday, Capt. Roger Clifford said a 19-year-old Baytown man is in police custody after he was arrested without incident or resistance at his family’s house Tuesday night.

 

Later in the day, police identified the man as Keith Chester Hill, a graduate of Ross S. Sterling High School. Hill is 6 feet and 1 inch tall and weighs 170 pounds. Victims had described their attacker as being between 5-10 and 6-1 and weighing about 200 pounds.

 

Hill now faces charges of aggravated sexual assault and aggravated kidnapping, both of which carry a $30,000 bond. A trial date in the 337th District Court has not been set yet.

 

Clifford said Hill, who was placed on a law enforcement watch list as a “person of interest,” shortly before Christmas. Clifford would not give details as to what led to the Hill’s placement on that list, or how many names are on it. Hill allowed police to collect a sample of his DNA, which they later identified as a match with DNA collected in connection with the May attack. Clifford stressed that the suspect has so far been linked only to that attack.

 

The police department worked closely with the Harris County sheriff’s department, the Houston office of the FBI, and behavioral and psychological experts from the FBI academy in Quantico,Va. Investigators have labeled the case as unusual because of the victims – young men. Most victims of sexual assaults are female.

 

“It appears the man’s major concern was domination and sexual gratification,” Clifford said. “Beyond that I wouldn’t be able to give a psychological explanation. He was definitely larger in stature than his victims, and he probably picked them because he knew he could physically handle them. But the victims definitely described him well, and that helped us a lot.”

 

Police have not publicly identified the victims, but they have described them all as young white men small in stature with athletic builds. The men are so similar in appearance, police said, they could almost be brothers.

 

The spate of attacks in 2006 has captured the attention of local and even national media. The case was featured on Fox’s “America’s Most Wanted” on Saturday. Clifford said he was grateful for the program’s segment, but did not say whether a tip in response to the show helped lead to the man’s arrest.

 

Clifford said the high degree of media exposure helped expedite the process of identifying the suspect and bringing him into custody. He said normally the Harris County Sheriff’s office takes longer to process requests for DNA and other testing. He also said the information on Baytown Talk, the Baytown Sun’s community message board, played a large role in the investigation.

 

“The (message boards) were also very helpful, people had a great deal of info almost every day,” Clifford said. “It shows the concern people in this town have. You can tell they were in fear for their children.” Police are waiting for victims of the other attacks to identify Hill in a photo lineup before they will speculate on his involvement in those attacks. Those attacks occurred in April, July, September and November.

 

In all of those incidents, including the May attack for which Hill is in custody, the attacker cornered the young men while they were alone, either inside or just outside of their parents’ homes. The man demanded sex, though not all the victims complied, police said. The man also robbed the young men, and exerted physical violence on at least one victim.
