bob_barron 0 Report post Posted January 21, 2007 SNL Review- Jake Gyllenhaal/The Shins During the show, I was on too much of a high from the Saints win to pay attention, then I missed the last half because I went to the afterparty, and it took me forever to get a torrent. And this show sucked, so writing a review was uninspiring. So I half assed it. Cold Opening Cast- Jason Sudeikis Thoughts- As much as I liked Forte’s Bush, Sudeikis’ Bush is a lot better. I think he has the impression down better and with Downey writing the skits, it’s a winner. This was very funny, and I especially enjoyed W. talking about sending the mailmen, train conductors and doormen over to Iraq. Can you believe they’ve had 5 different people portray George W? ***3/4 Monologue Cast- Jake Gyllenhaal, Will Forte, Sudeikis, Amy Poehler, Kristin Wiig, Maya Rudolph Thoughts- Kudos to SNL for having fun with the Brokeback stuff. Jake singing the Dreamgirls song was funny. Although, hello spoilers alert- not everyone knows Effie leaves the group! Jake singing the song was funny, but then he kept singing it and it stopped being funny. The girls were unnecessary, it’s supposed to be a solo number1 **1/2 Deephouse Dish Cast- Gyllenhaal, Kenan Thomspon, Andy Samberg, Poehler, Wiig, Rudolph Thoughts- Wrap your minds around this one- Deephouse Dish makes it on the air, passing through a pitch meeting, read through and dress rehearsal. Deephouse Dish becomes a recurring character, appearing several times, despite never being funny. Rachel Dratch, one of the main characters, leaves the show. This effectively ends Deephouse Dish. But no, somehow SNL preserves Deephouse Dish and decides to make it less funny by making Andy Samberg the new sidekick. I don’t get this show sometimes. Although, I did laugh at Amy Poehler talking about polar bears. * Bronx Beat with Betty and Jodi Cast- Gyllenhaal, Poehler, Rudolph, Wiig Thoughts- Wow, Maya was in a skit that involved no singing. At all. Colour me shocked. This was pretty lame, as Amy and Maya playing exasperated housewives does not comedy make. I did laugh at them running through the list of Native American tribes trying to guess what Jake was. ** Donald Trump Cast- Darrell Hammond, Thompson, Sudekis, Poehler, Rudolph Thoughts- I’m glad they gave Darrell’s Donald a different environment to work rather then filming commercials. This was funny, and Trump had a lot of good lines about how Rosie is a fat slob. I also liked him finishing up his rambling monologue by saying “The Apprentice.” ***1/2 Cool Dinner Cast- Gyllenhaal, Bill Hader, Wiig, Armisen, Samberg, Rudolph Thoughts- See, it’s funny b/c the dinner itself is cool. Poor Bill Hader, he deserves better then waiter. That’s why I always say they should’ve kept Dean Edwards around, to fill those generic roles. This was attempting to be so bad it’s funny, but it just ended up being really bad. And I thought the mushrooms ending killed it. Were they hallucinating Bill Hader as well? * Laser Cats 2 Cast- Lorne Michaels, Gyllenhaal ,Samberg, Hader, Poehler, Armisen Thoughts- Do you think they do these skits just to throw the people who endlessly speculate on hosts a bone? We learned about Drew Barrymore and Scarlett Johansson! Well unless there’s someone else famous named Scarlett. This wasn’t funny as the first one, and definitely could not top Cock in the Box, but it was still good. I was hoping it would be horrible so I could do more Rocky parallels to Andy Samberg’s SNL career. I mean hello, Rocky V is right there. I loved Jake’s character being named Dr. Scientist. Also, the ending with Andy saying, “I just start using Laser Cats again,” was awesome and totally made this skit. *** Stock Footage Awards Cast- Gyllenhaal, Poehler, Hammond, Wiig Thoughts- Fake talk show, Trump impression, fake awards show, this SNL is hitting on all cylinders. This had potential but it just wasn’t that funny. I did like the awkward banter between Rather and Pauley and Amy telling her kids to go to bed, but seriously- what was this? *1/2 The Shins “Phantom Limb” Thoughts- The lead singer looks like he rapes 10 year old girls. Don’t hate, he does. I also like that they’re one of those bands that has a random female in the group. Like Zwan and No Doubt. Only neither of those bands put me to sleep. Oh, I was saving that joke for New Slang, because this was actually pretty decent! **1/2 Weekend Update Cast- Meyers, Poehler, Armisen, Rudolph Thoughts- A solid Update. Seth and Amy did a good job joke-wise, but the commentaries weren’t all that good. I don’t like Fred’s Steve Jobs and Maya’s Whitney Houston has been beaten to death to the point that it’s really no longer funny. Luckily, this isn’t the Tina-Amy WU anymore, so the jokes are enough to carry it. *** Law and Order Acting Class Cast- Gyllenhaal, Poehler, Hader, Rudolph, Armisen Thoughts- This was a clever idea for a skit and I especially loved Amy saying, “Wait till you hear the bum bum” and this was the one original skit idea that actually worked. It didn’t live up to its potential, and I thought the Sam Waterson impression really hurt it. I would love to see someone imitate Steven Hill. *** Wheelchair Cast- Gyllenhaal, Sudeikis, Rudolph, Wiig Thoughts- Did I like this? WHAT? NO! Mocking cripples is funny, needless yelling…..not so much. * The Shins- “New Slang” Thoughts- zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz. I think in some alternate universe this is still going on. *1/2 Lawyers Cast- Gyllenhaal, Armisen, Thompson Thoughts- Russell and Tate this was not. Sigh, I still love that character. DUD The Bottom Line- The avg. skit was **.09 making this a thumbs down show. All of the skits were pretty lame and just nothing seemed to really click. Jake Gyllenhaal didn’t really add nothing, and was pretty bland. They put together a good string of shows, so they’re allowed one that missed the mark. Thumbs Down
