PGA Tour - February

Recommended Posts

This is one of my favourite months on the PGA calendar. After this week's (probably forgettable) stop in Scottsdale, you have Pebble Beach, Riviera and the WGC Match Play (not at La Costa this year -- maybe Ernie will show up!) in consecutive weeks.

Also, the Tour is going to Mexico for the first time ever, in an opposite-field event the same week as the Match Play.

Boo. Scottsdale is gorgeous, too. But, yes, all these tournaments are better than anything in icky Florida.

I hope Tiger plays Riviera, so this (non-)streak ends.

I said it not so much for the course as the quality of the field. But yes, Scottsdale is a really nice course.

Actually, looking at the field, it's better than I thought. I take it all back.

Apart from the Masters, my case to people who say golf is boring is always the 16th at Scottsdale on Saturday.

The TPC at Scottsdale (or whatever it's called now) is perfect for golf viewing. It can handle an unlimited amount of people. The negative of that is that there's a zillion people so it's hard to get a good spot, and commoners can attend (who usually get drunk) can make things interesting. The tourney should get better fields.

Does anyone think Tiger is skipping the Nissan Open in order to extend his streak considering that he has never won that tournament?

Makes me also wonder if people will count the Match-Play if he loses that since its not a stroke place event in his streak.

I hadn't heard anything bad about the International. I hope it doesn't vanish because I love the unique scoring format. I'll never forget how Steve Lowery went bananas a couple years back on the last few holes and had a putt to win against Rich Beem which he missed. That double-eagle on 17, though, was ridiculous.

They're holding a press conference today to announce that the International is indeed gone, thanks to lack of sponsorship. I'm interested to see what they get to fill the gap, since they have to have a tournament that week.

I think anyone who thinks that Tiger is skipping the Nissan to protect his streak is fooling himself. The Match Play is just as tough to win, if not tougher. And the Match Play WILL count because it's a PGA Tour event.

Pebble Beach is a prime example of why I love the fact that The Golf Channel has taken over early-round coverage of all tournaments. Before, I might get to watch an hour or two of the early rounds if I was lucky. Now, with TGC repeating their coverage, I can watch 5-6 hours. Pebble is easily my favourite golf course.

I'm watching the coverage of hole 7 on pgatour.com new LIVE broadcast. It's only one hole of coverage since I don't get the Golf Channel but it'll do for now.

Sucks about the International, I loved Castle Pines. Hopefully whatever tournament they replace it with will use a stableford system. I imagine they might not have a problem relocating the tournament because didn't they eliminate some venues for this year's schedule anyway? Just plug it into one of those and you've got your problem solved.

We need more stableford events. Preferably in one important tourney, at least. Yeah, it is gimmicky, but it's extremely fun to watch.

If Tiger does lose in the match play, the media will still say he has the "stroke play streak" going. Because only stroke play events in the US count.

That would be pretty silly, considering two of the 11 wins in Byron Nelson's streak were in match-play tournaments.

Does anyone know if a player has ever won the tournament and the pro-am in the same year? Mickelson has a chance to do it this year.

I hardly knew it (it was displayed on a graphic about an hour ago).....five men have done it, including Art Wall, Sam Snead and Johnny Miller. A guy I'd never heard of and I want to say Ray Floyd were the other two.

Attaboy, Phil.

It's west coast silly season.

Phil winning now is Perfectly Acceptable.

Baker-Finch with CBS now? Cool.

It's damn weird seeing Ian Baker-Finch in the CBS jacket.

It's even weirder seeing Faldo in the booth next to Jim Nantz. Of course, that pales in comparison to seeing Faldo in the booth next to Kelly Tilghman.

What? Outside of maybe the two in Hawaii, you've got some explaining to do if you're going to refer to Pebble and Riveria as Silly Season. And Phoenix doesn't count. One of the highest attendance rates in golf trumps the atmosphere.

I might let the Hope slide as being silly, however...

They're wonderful courses, but these tournies don't matter. Any pro-ams cannot be taken as serious events.

I used to consider the Players' to be the first big event of the year. Now it's the Match Play and Doral, I guess. I hope Doral is toughened up from the pitch n' putt it's been for a few years, though.

Depending on what happens next week, and at Bay Hill and Doral, a high finish by Phil could realistically make him the favourite at Augusta. He is defending, after all.

Eh, I wouldn't go that far. Tiger's still Tiger, and he does still have four green jackets. The thought of a Phil/Tiger duel on the back nine on Sunday is intriguing, though.

Nah. I hate that because all the American idiots will cheer for the fatass. While Tiger kicks his ass, of course, but meh.

I think Adam Scott will win.

Mickelson makes a mess of the ninth hole, including a chunked chip on the green for birdie. He's looking at bogey and will likely make double. This is going to be a fantastic back nine, with past Nissan champ Allenby, as well as several major winners contending.
