Mecca 0 Report post Posted February 4, 2007 Pinfalls: What are your views on the sale of WCW to the WWF? Maxx: Well, I have to say, once again, I’m one of the guys who, well, I don’t want to say I saw it coming but I definitely saw the fall of the WCW coming. Right after the first sort of announcement that they were selling--to the guys Eric Bischoff had found--I sent them a letter and I said that the biggest problem in the WCW is that the 'powers-that-be' are marks for the wrestlers in the company. And until the controls of World Championship Wrestling is turned over to people who have the courage to care about what the fans think and not what the boys and the jabronis in the dressing room think (guys like Ric Flair, Kevin Nash and Scott Hall) ... that are back there making the calls, thinking that they understand the wrestling business ... but until you turn it over to a seasoned veteran that doesn’t care that Flair is not on top because Flair doesn’t sell tickets anymore ... that people aren’t coming to watch Ric Flair anymore because the guy should be in a geriatric ward of an old folk’s home for God sake’s not on pro wrestling. He should truly be the poster boy for the fact that no wrestler should be able to get into the ring past the age of 45.
spman 0 Report post Posted February 4, 2007 I find it hilarious on so many levels that people have been saying Flair is over the hill and should move out of the way for younger guys to get over on top, since about 1985, and here we are in 2007, and the man is STILL on RAW every week, albeit in a much smaller capacity, but still. Reminds me of something I read about Sting a while ago. It sort of went like "When Sting debuted in 1987, people saw so much star potential for him to carry the world of wreslting once a few key guys, on their last legs by that point, retired. When Sting retired in 2001, he was still waiting for those few key guys to retire." I always found that hilarious for some reason.
Celtic Jobber 0 Report post Posted February 5, 2007 Ric Flair is so old now that it's almost embarrassing to see him wrestle, and he should never be seen in public without a shirt. Actually, Flair looks even older than he really is, I have friends who believe Ric's in his late 70's. But, it's not as if WWE depends on him to sell tickets or main event anymore (unless I've missed something).
Dobbs 3K 0 Report post Posted February 5, 2007 Have your friends actually seen anyone in their late 70s? Flair is in pretty darn good shape for being in his 50s. Most people can only dream of being in his shape at that age.
Cheech Tremendous 0 Report post Posted February 5, 2007 I don't care how old he is. I'd rather watch Flair than 95% of the current roster.
Dobbs 3K 0 Report post Posted February 5, 2007 Exactly. It's funny too, how many times both WCW and WWF at various points decided they didn't need Flair anymore, but then asked him to come back when business was down.
Cheech Tremendous 0 Report post Posted February 6, 2007 Exactly. It's funny too, how many times both WCW and WWF at various points decided they didn't need Flair anymore, but then asked him to come back when business was down. I was overlooking some old Observer stuff today and there was note about Lex Luger signing a new three year contract with the NWA in January 1990 and how that would probably push Flair out of the spotlight and into retirement. cabbageboy 0 Report post Posted February 6, 2007 The funniest thing about Payne's comment is that Flair at age 45 was still twice as good as Payne ever was. Hell, that would be 1994, a year where Flair had the world title and wrestled at a very high level against the likes of Vader and then in the various Hogan match (including that Havoc match that is one of Hogan's best).
