2GOLD Posted February 17, 2007 Report Posted February 17, 2007 My friend is having a serious f'n problem and NONE of the online solutions seem to apply or make sense to me. Basically she restarted her computer and all that comes up is the background, no icons or taskbar and when she accesses the computer task manager it appears nothing is working. She is running an XP operating system and I don't know what the problem is. She tried a system restore, nothing. She tried safe mode but it wouldn't come up. The computer is running, it just appears to be in a weird jam up. Does anyone know what the hell the problem is and what I can tell her to do?
Yuna_Firerose Posted February 17, 2007 Report Posted February 17, 2007 I had something like this happen. My laptop would start up, and after logging on Windows, I'd get an error message saying some .exe had performed an illegal operation (the .exe was for my wireless card; I forget the name). Anyway, though I could see icons, it would take at least ten minutes to access anything. I could get to task manager, but not load up anything. Eventually, I gave up and reformatted. I'm thinking that's what your friend will have to do.
World's Worst Man Posted February 17, 2007 Report Posted February 17, 2007 Could try starting explorer.exe through task manager and see what happens.
2GOLD Posted February 17, 2007 Author Report Posted February 17, 2007 Could try starting explorer.exe through task manager and see what happens. Yeah, that's what I told her and eventually we figured out the nightmare. One of the files was goofed up, we repaired it and now it's working fine. But damn, it was a hassle trying to track down the right file. If I was a drinking man, I'd be having four jacks and a few rum and cokes right now.
