May 17-20: AT&T Classic, TPC at Sugarloaf, Atlanta (Phil Mickelson)

 

May 24-31: Crowne Plaza Invitational at Colonial, Colonial CC, Dallas (Tim Herron)

 

May 31-June 1: the Memorial Tournament by Morgan Stanley, Muirfield Village, Dublin, Ohio (Carl Pettersen).

 

How long has the BellSouth been called the AT&T? And the fact that 'the Memorial' starts with a lowercase 'T' has always kinda bugged me. Also, no one posted that Lorena Ochoa took over Annika in the women's rankings.

I'm pumped for the Players. It should be great.

 

Ochoa gets no love because the media only cares about 14 year olds, like that means anything. It's the same bullshit in tennis. It sucks.

There's been a lot of deliberation about the cutline, and if it should be changed. A couple of ideas being kicked around:

 

* 60 and ties.

* 65 and ties.

* Same as now, but if the number of players playing the weekend would exceed 78, the cut line would revert to the number below 70.

* 75 and ties on Friday, 60 on Saturday.

 

I'm fine with the system now, but if they change it, I'd like to see it go to 60. I don't really like the last suggestion, and really don't like the second to last. Saturday is Moving Day, not Hope To Survive Day.

 

And off-topic, can I get a rundown of the FedEx Cup playoffs again? What's the elimination tier? I recall it being 30 for the final in Atlanta, but that's all I can remember? Shouldn't it be more in sync with the money leaders. Should the 15 guys who make the playoffs potentially lose their cards six weeks later? That's a little silly, isn't it?

FedEx Cup playoffs start with 144 players. Then, slowly go down to 30 throughout that month. I don't fully understand how they proceed through those eliminations.

 

Then, those that don't qualify for the final 30 have to rely on finishing in the Top 125 in the money list to keep their card.

 

I absolutely hate this system, and I'm sure people will realize this when they're massively confused by September.

 

Changing the cut system would be silly. It's fine as it is now.

Tiger seems up for this tourney, I think his focus in previous TPC was on the Masters.

I don't agree. He's still winning either Bay Hill or Doral every year.

 

There's a reason why the top players struggle at Sawgrass. It negates length. Short course. Narrow fairways. Usually receptive greens (that won't be the case this year, which will help the top players). It's a course where the guy hitting the ball best in the entire field, will win.

Totally agree. I don't have a clue what makes this playoff so great under the current format and have been confused since Finchem announced it. The chance that a player who starts 144th can work his way up the standings within a month is ridiculous and I do not think that its possible. There are WAY too many spots in the playoff to begin with anyway. It should've been around 100 or so.

The way this course is playing, he may not have to. He's +1 on the day and still tied for the lead.

Why on Earth does the FedEx cup use that stupid "Earn points through the season, and then get them reset to a slider value for the playoffs!" system? Why not just go elimination style, top ___ of the first tournament go on, then the top ___ of the remaining in the second, etc. instead of some convoluted points system?

Because this runs of the risk of Tiger, Vijay, Phil, etc. of screwing up one of the opening tournaments and not getting to the next round and thus equaling poor ratings. I hate it as much as you do but you have to look at it from Finchem's perspective.

 

Good win by Phil today at the Players, looks like working with Harmon is already paying off. However, the real test will be at the U.S. Open and if he can overcome his demons there to finally win one to add to his career resume.

 

I guess ESPN tomorrow will be debating "Is Phil ready to challenge Tiger?!?!?!"

They were already hyping it up on the Golf Channel PostGame. Sigh.

 

Say what you will about Winged Foot, but did anyone else think Johnny Miller was getting a little carried away with the possibility of Phil stumbling and opening the door for a playoff?

 

What did O Hair wind up shooting on the 72nd hole? I went to do my laundry after Phil hit the 18th fairway, but I did read on tsn.ca that his position dropping after 17 would up costing him a difference of $747,000.

I had him in my 2004 pool (his rookie year) after a fine year on the Nationwide in 2003. The Golf Channel put together a list of his peers who thought he was the next big thing. He won his first year on tour, also in Atlanta.

Does anyone have any idea if there are any good black golfers in the amateur ranks. Tiger Woods winning at Augusta 10 years ago was supposed to change things.
