Replacing the Video Card in a Media Center PC

Recommended Posts

Ok, so it's been a while since I've done any PC upgrading, and I'm thinking about upgrading the Video card in my HP Media Center since it doesn't seem to be as good as I want. Right now I have a Pentium D, Dual Core PC running at 3.2 GHz, 2 GB RAM, 500 GB Hard Drive, so its a pretty high end machine (I bought it last October). As for the video card, right now it has the default NVIDIA GeForce 7300 LE card that came with it, and it's not too bad. I do a little bit of gaming on it, but its most an editing suite that I do a lot of photo/video work on (Thus why I have a media center).

Now picking at the computer today, I noticed that there seems to be 2 cards that handle the video on this machine. There is the NVIDIA card, which has the VGA, S-Video, and component out, and there is another card which handles the input to the PC (TV Tuner, etc). I don't know if anyone has upgraded one of these before (or at least something similar to it) but would I be able to simply add in a new high end video card (more then likely something from the ATI suite) and it not fuck up the TV tuner/DVR functions?

To try and clarify, here a few pics of what I have:

You should be able to. They serve 2 different functions. 1 is a video card that handles the video and takes the workload off of your RAM. The other is a TV card which just allows a TV input.

They shouldn't work hand and hand, so you shouldn't have any problem.
