Cigars

Recommended Posts

I am by no means a Cigar expert. I just happen to throw a lot of parties, so a lot of Cigars happen to come through this way. I don't even know the names of any of them, but most were pretty good tasting. I just bought some from a guy at work who's best friend owns a store. He bought me a few different types, some light tobacco some dark tobacco, full leaves. I know the big ones he bought me are called Corona Mordero and I guess they can burn for a few hours.....*jesus christ* The shorter fatter ones he got me are called Rothchilds.

I have had a Punch Cigar before way back in the day, and of course have had the cheapies like swisher sweets and other junk.....

So any other Cigar smokers on the board?

Cigars don't make you cool. Any cigar smokers here just like acrid-smelling phallic symbols in their mouths.

Cigars ARE supposed to burn for a long time- the whole thing behind cigarettes becoming the norm in the early 20th century was that folks wanted to get their smokes over and done with in a quicker fashion, since no one had "the time" to kick back and enjoy a nice cigar anymore. Which is kind of symbolic of American society as a whole, I guess.

Swisher Sweets and the like don't count as cigars either (cigarillos is what it's called in Spanish and I think in English as well, or something similar). Punch is a decent cigar. Cigars usually go pretty good with some Maker's Mark or Johnnie Walker black as well, although I haven't tried the two together in quite some time since I try to avoid liquor these days.

And yes, I've gotten Cuban cigars before. They're usually pretty harsh, very strong, but very good. My grandma is able to bring back 2-3 boxes or so every time she goes out there to visit. I assume I can too since I'm technically a dual-citizen, but I'm not messing with that yet..

Question on Cuban Cigars......this same guy at work said his friend gets Cuban seed cigars. He says the tobacco inside is the same in a cuban cigar, but they are just grown in a different country, that way it gets around the legality issues. Is this common, I mean common enough to where you can walk into most cigar shops and ask for Cuban seed cigars and they will break 'em out for you or is there still legality issues? Not that I care or anything, but I am just trying to see if this guy's friend is full of it or not.....

The secret of the cigars comes from the soil, the climate, the environment, and most importantly, the rollers. Dominican cigars are the next best thing- tons of refugees from Cuba and the climate and soil is very similar. So don't buy the b.s. on the Cuban seed cigars- you can get a Cohiba and it'd be a hell of a lot better.

The legality issues only come into play if the whole thing is made and sold and/or exported from Cuba.

For the most part, cigar shops do have `em, but they'll exaggerate the quality and markup the price ridiculously high to get you to buy into the hype. The best thing you can do is have a friend with Cuban citizenship go there and bring some back, or take the (you're in Sacramento, right?) 13 hour drive up to Vancouver, B.C. and get the real deal there yourself. It's a 5 hour drive for me, and I'm planning on getting some, seeing if I could bring a few back. I'll sell you some if I'm coming down to California this summer.

As much as I love smoking, I've never really gotten into cigars. I had a cuban while I was in Jamaica, and found it pretty underwhelming. I look at them the same way as wine. Go ahead and get into it if you want, but it's just something rich fucks use to try to impress one another.
