Promo: “Plagues”

-------------------------------------------------------------------

The scene opens up inside the office of the new SWF Commissioner, Landon “La Cucaracha” Maddix. It is an early-Tuesday afternoon and the weather outside is a crisp seventy degrees. But inside the office of The Cockroach, things are about to heat up.

“Well, I am glad we can finally come to a deal,” says Landon Maddix. Sitting in a leather chair behind his desk, looking over some papers in his hands. Stapling the pages together, he slips them into a brown envelope. With a big smile on his face, he looks up at his two guests. “Here you go, Mak.”

Leaning over his desk, Landon hands the envelope to the paraplegic announcer, the former “Franchise”, Mak Francis.

“I am as happy as you are, Landon. I’m just glad that Spike over here is finally motivated enough to come back to the ring.”

And sitting next to Mak Francis is none other than the New Straight Edge Sensation, the former multi-time Cruiserweight, Tag Team and Hardcore Champion, “Hollywood” Spike Jenkins. Wearing his patent black “Heartless” sweat shirt with the hood up, covering most of his face.

“And how do you feel about everything now that the paperwork is done and over with?” asks the Commissioner.

“…Ecstatic,” mumbles Jenkins.

“Come on, Spike. Cheer up! We just got you a new contract that has most of the benefits you asked for. You’re back in the SWF for good!”

Spike rolls his eyes. “…Yeah…”

Francis lets out sigh, before turning his attention back to Landon Maddix (who just happens to be eyeing Spike weirdly).

“Well, I have to get going. I’ll take this paper work over to the companies attorneys on the fourth floor and I’ll fax over copies to your lawyer, Spike.”

“Okay.”

Landon rises from his chair and walks around the desk. Mak wheels himself over towards Spike and taps him on the shoulder.

“Seriously, Spike. Don’t screw this one up. You may not get another opportunity and I don’t think I’ll be able to help you out again.”

“I appreciate it.”

Francis nods and wheels himself over towards the door, where Landon is standing. The new commissioner opens the door and shakes the hand of Mak. “I’ll see you later this week. Get home safely.”

“Take care, Landon.”

And with that, Francis wheels out of the office Landon pokes his head outside the door and is heard saying, “Meg, can you bring in a couple of drinks. Thanks.” He walks back into the room, walking past Jenkins and back to his chair.

“So, Spike. I think I should be honest here. I wasn’t too sure on signing you to another deal, after your…umm…past performances. But you really showed a lot in that multi-man match I booked at Class is in Session and, well, Mak really pushed for you.”

“…Okay…”

“Not really a talker anymore, huh?” Landon chuckles to himself. “I remember when you wouldn’t shut up! How long have we been together with the company? Since the Junior League?”

“…Yeah, it’s been a long time.”

“I always thought you had talent, Spike. Just commitment issues, you know? I’m really looking forward to seeing how you do this time around. The SWF can really use someone like you around.”

“…Right…”

“I have to say, though. I really like this whole Straight Edge, silent ass kicker thing you got going. It’s similar to Stephens, but not too much, you know what I mean?”

“…What?”

A knock is heard on the door and Megan Skye walks in. In her hands are two cans of Pepsi MAX ©. Walking past Jenkins, she leans over Landon’s desk and hands him the sodas. Winking at her “boss”, she turns and walks right back out the door.

Spike Jenkins doesn’t try to cover up the fact that he carefully watches Megan walk out of the room.

“Hey, hey! She’s spoken for,” says Landon as he rises from his chair. “Anyway, how about a drink to celebrate our new partnership. I know you’re straight edge, so I got us some soda.”

Spike lets out a groan and sits upright in the chair. Peeling back the hood, he looks directly at Landon.

“All right, listen man. I can’t do this anymore. I think you’re an idiot…and I can’t stand this whole ‘silent but deadly’ bullshit you and you’re guys are trying to push on me.”

Landon stares wide eyed as Jenkins, unsure of what to say. For a moment, there is silence, but Landon popping open one of the cans ends that.

“…Excuse me?”

“Seriously, you’re sitting there telling me about the ‘old times’ and how you like this new me and all that? Bull shit. I can’t stand it. So listen, now that the paperwork is all signed and I’m officially back, this is how it’s going to go.”

Landon sits back in his chair, slightly amused. “Please, tell me how it is going to go.”

“Well, first of all, no more of this silent crap. From now on, I’m going to let everyone, especially you, know exactly how I feel. The old Spike Jenkins? The one you said you remember back from our Junior League days? Yeah, he’s back now.”

“…Fantastic…”

“But don’t worry, Landon. I’m still going to do what I do best and beat the crap out of people. Think of this as a business opportunity between you and I. I made money for Peters because he knew that if he let me go out there and do what I wanted to do, the ratings would go up, and they did. Flesher didn’t let me do that…and well, we all know how that turned out.”

“So…what you’re saying is that I should give in and let you have your way?” asks Maddix.

“See, I knew me and you were on the same page. Where is that soda?”

Maddix takes the extra can of soda on his desk and swipes it to the floor. “I lost it…but you have to be joking? You think I’m going to give you free reign?”

“I think you missed the point, Landon,” says Spike, who rises up from his chair. “I’m not asking you to give me anything. If I want something, I’m taking it. I’m just letting you know in advance. Thanks for the drink.”

Jenkins turns and walks to the door. Turning the knob, he begins to make his exit, but not before turning towards Landon.

“…And I’m about to hit on your secretary, too.”

With that, Jenkins closes the door behinds him and exits. Landon leans back in his chair, puts his feet up on his desk and takes a sip of his Pepsi MAX ©.

Thinking deeply to himself, he says aloud, “I liked him a lot better when he wasn’t talking…”

I'm liking this, I have to say. Landon sounds like Landon, Spike sounds a bit less emo, I'll be intrigued to see where Spike takes this. I'll go on record as saying that I agree with promo-Landon as thinking Spike has talent, just commitment issues. If the new schedule (or whatever else has occurred) can bring out the best in him, I think the fed will benefit.
